?HTessr3. Editors : When I penned the article
under the title of " our Rail Road and its new
President," it was with no desire or intention of
provoking a controversy with any one f neither
aid I then or now conceive the tone of the article
so very captious, or the reasoning so unsound
as a " A Considerable Stockholder" has
discovered it to be. My only motive was to
disapprove of the step that had been taken by
the new Administrator, so soon after his promotion,
to discontinue a practice which, as far
ns my knowledge goes, prevails on all railroads,
viz: that of going and returning the. sume. day
for one fare. I said " he had vacated his seat

Bank of Charleston," which phrase was onlyfigurative
and apparent to every one who read
it. The President being sneered at, is a mistake
entirely. His high character as a private
citizen and a public ollicer, forbids any such
construction being put upon mv remarks. Now
with regard to Kershaw building the road,
Sumter giving the right of way, there not being
one hundred shares owned in the District, Richland
throwing cold water on the enterprise, &c.

legitimate trade of Camden has any bearing

can be bought as cheap hero as in Columbia.
The distance to Charleston is one hundred and
forty-two miles, the fare thither 85 00, or about
three and a half cents per mile. To Columbia,
*>ne hundred and twenty-four miles, (sixty-two
-each way,) the fare is $5, or a fraction above
four cents per mile. Why should two individuals
leaving here at the same time, pay each the
aame amount, when one travels 142 miles and
the other only 124 miles ? This, 1 think, shows
considerable inclination to draw the legitimate
trade of Kershaw, Sumter, and Richland too,
to Charleston. 1 would say let tnere oe an
equality among all the sections; raise the fare
to Charleston to four cents, or reduce it to the
intermediate stations in the same ratio as from
Hamburg, Columbia, and Camden, to Charleston.

Massachusetts Legislature.?The recent
action of the Legislature of Massachusetts
presents sometliing very nearly approaching to
a: Legislative puzzle. They have passed reso.
lutions declaring the unalterable purpose of the
people of that State to resist the extension of
slavery to the new territories. They have affirmed,
also, that the fugitive slave is entitled
torthe trial by jury. In one branch these resolutions
passed unanimously?in the other branch
by a huge majority. At a subsequent session
of the same body, resolutions of instruction to
Mr. Webster to vote for the exclusion of slave
ry from any Territorial government aoout to
be formed, and again3t the intended bill for tbe
re-capture of fugitive slaves, have been rejected
"byi the House of Representatives. This is
jather perplexing in the history of Massachusetts
legislation. It leads to much " guessing "
in the premises. Do these Massachusetts legislators
intend their,, first resolutions &3 n mere
bnt'.tm fulmen, or, as a tub to the whale ? ?
something ip the nature of an apparent con
eessiolS to jiopular prejudice?a compromise
with die rampant spL it'of fanaticism, in appearing
tiyitkl-to'thatopirit by abstractions, whilst;
they refuse- to tie up the hands of their Senator
by somethings tangible and practical in the form
of instnictioas ? If(' this is the proper interpretation
or solution of this legislative riddle, it
confirms the props icty of Mr. Webster's language,
in his late Boston speech, when he invokes
the pepnle of his Stato to conquer tlieir
prejudices. The Legislature of Massachusetts
have, however, placed themselves in rather a
singular attitude before the world, being willing
to affirm, through a set of abstract propositions,
what they refuse to* put into a shape
which would, render them of any effect, except
as a mere record of opinion.

from Lafayette, la., to Philadelphia, with the
remains of his wife and child, recently deceased.
Both of the corpses were enclosed in one

the floating part of the wreck with his little
daughter, and both were saved.
