Col. F. W. Davie, of Chester, a zealous and
faithful member of the Legislature from that District,
and a gentleman whose opinions received
respect from his Legislative colleagues, while a
member of that body, died at his residence in that
District on the 9th instant.
We are informed that the Governor has invited
the Hon. It. Barnwell Rhett, to deliver before
the Legislature, at its nexfsession, an Oration
on the Liftf, Character, and Public. Sendees
of Mr. Calhoun. The selection is the very
best that could have been made.?Mercury.
The Council Chamber of the Third Municipality,
of New Orleans, has been ordered to be
hung around with the weeds 01 mourning ior
one month, as a token of respect to the memory
of John C. Calhoun.?lb.
Good Move.?At the Tuolumm Gold Diggings,
in California, a by-law prohibits gambling under
N penalty of the forfeiture of all money offered as a
stake or bank.

Snow (some one says) is a white page in the
book of nature.
Northern Institotions.?From recent statistical
tables published in the New York journals,
we learn that the enormous number of 18,000 persons
in that city live in cellars or other places under
ground, and the greater portion of them in
" lots" of five to a room.
Sixty-five thousand letters and five thousand
newspapers were sent from San Francisco in the
month of January. Twenty thousand letters Were
received in the same time.

A meetintr was held in the Court House of
this District, composed of gentlemen of the Bar
of this and from the neighboring Districts, to
make some demonstrations of respect for tho
memory of R. 0. P. Stewart, Esq., lately a
deceased brother, whose death occurred at his
residence in Lancaster, after a short illness on
the 13th instant.
On motion, Col. T. N. Dawkins was called
to the Chair, and W. A. Moore appointed Secre
tar}'.
A brief but impressive address was delivered
from the chair, explanatory of the melancholy
occasion of the meeting; After which, Mr. J.
Williams rose and made some prefatory remarks,
expressive of his sorrow for the loss of a
friend and brother and sympathy in the affliction
of the bereaved family, and concluded by
offering the following Preamble and Resolutions,
which were unanimously adopted by the
meeting:?
Whereas, the Almighty Disposer of events
hath seen fit io remove from the sphere of human
existence, in the prime of life, vigor of manhood,
and in the midst of hisusefulness our much
esteemed friend and associate, brother Robert
Octavius Patton Stewart, we, the members of
Vie Bar of this and from the Districts of Union,
York, Chester, Fairfield, Kershaw and Chesterfield,
to testify our respect for the memory
of the deceased, and to give expression to a
sense of sorrow for the sudden and unexpected
calamity which has occurred in our fraternal
circle in the removal from our midst of late lamented
brother, have therefore?

and heartfelt sympathy to the family of the

Resolved, That the Chairman communicate
the proceedings of this meeting to the Court
now in session, with a request that the same
be entered upon the minutes thereof.
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting
be published in the Camden and Columbia
papers, and that a copy of the same be sent to
the family of the deceased.

THE FIRE LAST NIGHT.
A fire broke out about half past one o'clock
last night, in the building on the corner of
Washington and Hull streets, belonging to Mrs
Ewart, and in the occupancy, of Prof., Jones.?
The fire was evidently the work of an incendiary,
as its origin seemed to be from beneath the
floor.

they left their beds, without being able to save
more than ordinary wearing apparel, if that.?
Several members of the family were confined
by sickness, and the coffined-body of a servant
was in the kitchen; these were fortunately rescued.
The house contained much valuable
finrniture and a fine library, which were entirely
consumed, so rapid were the flames.
The house was partly covered by insurance.
The prompt exertions of the firemen prevented
the spread of the conflagration.

Messrs. Howland 4 Aspinwall have commenced
a suit for libel against the New Orleans True Delta,
based on an article attacking them for overloading
the steamer Georgia, which steamer they
bad no control of. The Georgia carried 1200 passengers
from Havana to Chagres.

CAROLINA RAILROAD COMPANY,
At the last meeting of the Board of Directors,
held on the 20th instant, the following resolutions
were adopted:
" Resolved, That the exigencies of the Company
require that the remaining instalments upon
the existing shares shall be culled in.
" Resolved, That the same Committee be authorized
to arrange the details, and advertise the
calls, accompanied with an address to the Stockholders
explanatory of the advantages of the
measure."
In obedience to these resolutions, we beg
leave to submit to you a short statement of the
condition of your affairs; and we hope it will
have the effect of convincing you that the calling
in of the remaining instalments is a measure
which, though demanded, it is true, by our necessities,
is supported equally by the soundest
considerations of policy ; and we are the more
anxious to convince you of this, because we
earnestly desire si united and spirited co-operation
on your part in the measure, as essential to
impart efficiency to the administration of our
affairs, and sustain, by the confidence it will
imply in the enterprise, the market value of
your shares.
The able report of your own Committee, submitted
through their Chairman, Mr. Ravcuel, at
the last Annual Convention, renders it unnecessary
for us to go into any details. It was
there shown that the aggregate debts of the
Company amounted on the 31st of December,

This is the difficulty with which wo have to
contend. The Hoard caused an elaborate report
to be prepared and submitted to them by
I this Committee; and though predetermined
against calling in the instalments, after a careful
consideration of that report, and patient in
vestigation and discussion of the subject in all
its bearings, their judgment became entirely
convinced that it was a measure imperatively
demanded by the emergency, and strongly sustained
by wisdom and prudence. We will endeavor
to show you what the operation will be

of stock ; complete all the improvements in
progress, and bring the capabilities of the Road
into full and efficient action; enter upon the
payment of regular and certain dividends, and
give the shares an appreciable and permanent
value. Relying upon the soundness of these
conclusions, the Board have instructed us, in an'
nouncing the call of the instalments, to apprise
you also of the confident expectation they entertain
that in July next they will commence,
and continue regularly, as they believe, the payment
of semi-annual dividends out of the earnings
of the Company; and we are directed to
express the hope that tins statement of your affairs
will inspire you, as it has them, with renewed
confidence in the enterprize, and prevent
any sacrifice of the shares. The moderation of
their views does not permit them to encourage
the expectation of larger dividends than G per
cent, but even the most prudent will readily admit
that it is very far froni unreasonable to expect
that the income will be greater, and the

going estimate : results tlmt would, oC course,
materially enlarge the dividends, particularly as
the interest on the permanent debt would be
stationary.
It will also be borne in mind, that very great
extensions of our communication ill soon take
place by the Greenville -and Anderson, Charlotte
and .Manchester Roads, and by the Roads
in Upper Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee,
which are coming to completion, and that very
considerable additions to the transportation and
travel, and consequently to the profits of our
Road, must, hereafter, result from their completion.
The extent of the future increase of income
from these sources, we do not pretend to
estimate; but every intelligent mind will per

shares.
With these results in prospect, not a share
ought to be sold at any sacrifice, nor should necessity
force any to make such sacrifices.?
Money is abundant everywhere, and cannot bo
scarce here. This is a great public work, in
which the State, the City, and many of our
Banks and other public institutions, are largely
interested; and those private stockholders who
require some aid to meet this call, cannot, under
such circumstances, and at such a time, fail
to obtain it. In order to facilitate the payments
as much as possible, the calls will be made as
follows:
