distinctly a comet to westward, nearly in the
track of the sun, and about 11 degrees above
the horizon, as measured with the quadrant, the
nUeleus very distinct, and about as large in appearance
as Mars; the tail curved and pointed
towards the south, (S. W.) quite bright, and
nearly a degree in length, visible to the naked
eye, but much larger when viewed with the
spy-glass. !: was seen by all the crew for 20
minutes, when a cloud intercepted it, and it
never more was seen."
It is thougSit that this may be the great comet
of 1204 and 1550, the return of which astronomers
arc expecting about this time.

Messrs. Editors?As the time approaches
when selections have to he made lor delegates to
represcut us in the Convention to be held at
Nashville i.i June next, it is gratifying to see
the increasing interest that is every where
throughout the Southern States, felt on the subject
of that Convention. In our own Congressional
District, all the people are of one mind,
and that is to hope for nothing hut what can
be gained by the unity intelligence and strength
of the youth. The day of compromises is past,
;and the Constitution huo been too longt impered
with already, and that noble document left
us by our fathers has been too long disregarded
by northern fanatics for the South now to hope
for any tiling front Congress, and we have nothing
to do now but what honor, interest and
duty alike dictate, an ajycul to the people.
But a word or two about the Convention.?
There are two delegates and two alternates to
be sent front this Congressional District, which
includes Fairfield, Richland, Sumter, Kershaw
and Lancaster Districts. Fairfield, it seems,
because she lias the member to Congress, will
not ask for either a member or alternate to the
Convention, leaving each one of the other Districts
to send one; and it is a question of importance,
from which District the members may
be selected. As the object of the Convention
is to embody public opinion in the whole South,
the members of that body should lie selected
from that part of the Congressional District that
would best enable them to act and speak knowingly
the sentiments of the people they represent.
Then Richland clearly is entitled to a
delegate, and the other should be selected from
Kershaw, leaving the alternates to be taken
from Sumter and Lancaster. No argument
need be used to prove the propriety of the above
course, a'glance at the geographical position (f
the District will at once suggest the correctness
of the course I have indicated. Now the main
question is, who ought to go to the Convention?
1 answer, Richland will do her duty, siie lias
jdenty of men to fill any "place in the picture."
Sumter and Lancaster know their duty and will
perform it; hut I may be permitted to say a
word for Kershaw. Col. James Chesnut, Jr.,
and Win. E. Johnson, Esq., are the only men
that I have heard spoken of for the place, and
between those gentlemen or their friends there
will be 110 strife for the place ; which one can
most conveniently go will doubtless be elected.
They both possess all those qualifications that

This is the difficulty with which we have to
contend. The Hoard caused an elaborate report
to be prepared and submitted to tliem by
this Committee; and though predetermined
against calling in the instalments, after a careful
consideration of that report, and patient in
vestigation and discussion of the subject in all
its hearings, their judgment became entirely
convinced that it was a measure imperatively
demanded by the emergency, and strongly sustained
by wisdom and prudence. We will endeavor

from there sources, we do not pretend to
estimate; but every intelligent mind will perceive
its bearing upon the present value of our

With these results in# prospect, not a share
ought to be sold at any sacrifice, nor should necessity
force any to make such sacrifices.?
Money is abundant everywhere, and cannot be
scarce here. This is a great public work, in
which the State, the City, and many of our
Banks and other public institutions, are largbly
interested; and those private stockholders who
require some aid to meet this call, cannot, under
such circumstances, and at such a time, fail
