We are acquainted with hut four papers
which are opposed to the Southern Convention,
and they are all whig?. Of these we venture
the assertion, without knowing the fact, that j
three of them are edited by Northern men?the
Wilmington Chronicle, North Carolina Argus,
and Augusta Chronicle & Sentinel. The fourth,
(the FavetteviUc Observer,) if not edited by a
Northern than, (which we strongly believe to
be the case,) is opposed to the Convention on
account of its hostility to Mr. Calhoun.

The Congress of San Salvador, Central A me
riea, commenced its session on the 25th January.
With this Republic, as previously with Nicaragua
and Honduras, Mr. Squier has arranged
v the terms of the treaty, which has been deal
wtched to Washington. The President of the
Hooscrof Deputies, in reply to the address of
the President of the Republic, announcing the
fact, said: %
** Since 1823 the |?eople of San Salvador, full
of the most lively enthusiasm, have inspired not
only for the friendship of that great and ]>oworth!
Republic, but still more, to behold its sacred
rights secured nnder the influence of that portentous
constellation."

Then may we, and our children, and
our children's children, proceed, hand in hand
together; in one common pathway of houndless
prosperity, cheered hy the hopeful prospect

suitable Tribute of Respect to the memory of Jas.
It. McKain, Esq., who lost his life on the 5th ult.,
bv the burning of the steamer Orline St. John on
tlie Alabama River.
The following was reported, and adopted unanimously
:
In. common with the citizens of this community,
with our elder brethren the Sons of Temperance,
and with the afflicted family of the deceased, we
mourn the loss of that estimable citizen, and tin/flinching,
sterling advocate of temperance, Jamf.s
McKain. In his death our Section has lost no
ordinary friend. We mourn the loss of the Fonn4
tier of our Section. His ever watchful anxiety for
theJbtftl of the community, and his paternal rv
the moral improvement ot lis voiiiii, m^^fuced
him to he first to examine the beautiful
f ojrerations of the Order. To see the good, and to
recommend it to the adoption of others, was to
him a work of real pleasure and of love. Ilis
warmth of nature and active zeal, and his teaching
example, first unfolded to us its beauties, and
his wise counsel and supervising experience since
.our organization, have never failed to aid and encourage-us.
Under his guidance we felt safe?
with his counsel we were sure to avoid error?
and with the light ot his pure example before us,
we knew our course was right and approved of
J?y an overruling Providence. In him the elements '
of goodness, usefulness, decision, prudence, phi.
Janthropy, wisdom, and all the virtues of a devoted
christian, were so mingled, we very much fear
" we ne'er shall look upon his like again." He it

a blank page of our Record Book, and that the
name of James Robert MrKain?the Founder of
our Section?lie inscrjb.'d on a separate page, with
the date of his death.
Resolved, That in the funeral ceremonies that
may be observed upon the arrival of his remains,
we solicit a place in the procession by our Elder
Brethren, the Sons of Temperance, and that we
wear on that occasion regalia and the usu?.l badge
of mourning.
Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be
presented to ^ family and be published in the

the experience of the past to sustain us, fortified

conclusions, the Hoard have instructed us, in nn|
noimcing the call of the instalments, to apprise
i you also of the confident expectation they en!
tertain that in July next they will commence,
and continue regularly, as they believe, the payment
of semi-annual dividends out of the earnings
of the Company; and we are directed to
express the hope that this statement of your af
fairs will inspire you, as it has them, with renewed
confidence in the enterprize, and prevent
any sacrifice of the shares. The moderation of
their views does not permit them to encourage
the expectation of larger dividends than 6 per
cent, but even the most prudent will readily admit
that it is very far from unreasonable to expect
that the income will be greater, and the
expenses less, than the sums stated in the fore-;
going estimate: results that would, of course, .
materially eidarge the dividends, particularly as
the interest on the permanent <lebt woultl be I
stationary.
It will also be borne in mind, that very great
extensions of our communication will soon take
place by the Greenville and Anderson, Charlotte
and Manchester Roads, and by the RoadB
in Upper Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, 1
which are coming to completion, and that very
considerable additions to the transportation and
travel, and consequently to the profits of our
Road, must, hereafter, result from their compleAvtnnt

come from these sources, we do not pretend to
estimate; hut every intelligent mind will perceive
Its hearing upon the present value of our
shares.
With these results in prospect, not a share
ought to he sold at any sacrifice, nor should necessity
force any to make such sacrifices.?
Money is abundant everywhere, and cannot be
ftcarce here. This is a great public work, in
which the State, the. City, and many of our
Hanks and other public institutions, are largely
interested; and those private stockholders who
require some aid to meet this call, cannot, under
such circumstances, and at such a time, fail
to obtain it In orderto facilitate the payments
as much as possible, the calls will be made as
follows:
