The Charleston Courier. f
The readers of the Journal will recollect, that aj
week since we laid'down the proposition and gave|
the proof, that the Charleston Courier was un-^
sound on the Southern question. We did not ex-g
pect then that that paper would notice us ; forS
the simple reason that it would be against its in-|
terests: not from a fear of being beaten in an edi-S
torial war, but simply because the eliciting of pub-S
lie attention to the fact, would operate against it.g
It is taken largely at the North, and bv Northern^
men in the South. It, instead ot the Mercury, is^j
considered the organ of South Carolina; andasjjj
the consequence, our opinions and sentiments are^
not represented abroad. i

The great southern convention at Nashville, in
June next, is a tonic of conversation throughout
Middle and West Tennessee. The Whig press at
Nashville commenced a war on this proposed 3

The Chairman briefly stated the object of
the meeting?whereupon Capt. John Koykh;

Col. J. C. Iiaile were appointed the Committee.
The Committee, through its Chairman, Capt
J. Boykin, rejiorted the following, which wen
unanimously adopted:
PRKAMRT.K.
Tlie condition of our affairs in relation to tin
Federal Government, and the non-slaveholdinj!
States, calls for serious reflection. Their intolerable
aggressions, conceived with deliberation,
and pursued with steadiness, threatning tin E
equality of States?enrfangeiing our j ropertvl
as citizens?destroying the peace and safety off
the whole country?deprive us of any expectation
that ordinary measures can restore us to
our rights, or longer uphold our honor.
The time then has arrived for action. Perfect
union among all thoso who have common
interest, and feel common grievances, is now
the first great object to be attained. Wc believe
that a unity of feeling already exists in the
South, as to the dangers which threaten us.?

DEATH OF MR. CALHOUN.
The sad intelligence of the death of our il'ustrious
Senator reached ns yesterday, a few
hours after his decease. He expired at Wash-H
ington, at a quarter past 7 o'clock yesterday E
Horning. . w
We can scarcely realize the fact that we areB
penning the record of the death of John C.H
Calhoun, for, although we might have been inR
some degree prepared for the melancholy events
yet we fondly clung to the hope that he wouldB
he spared to the nation, and that he should, inH
the declining years of his life, calmly enjoy thoR
consolation and reward of his pure and uevotedB
patriotism. Hut he has fallen ? fallen in thefl
thickest of the tight?and upon the field where
ie has won so many trophies. Ere the echoes
?fhis last rallying cry for the Constitution?of
.is last appeal for his country?have died away
among 1 cr hills and valleys, his voice is foreve:
hushed in the quiet of death, and the wail of a
nation's sorrow follows swiftly after the warning
tones of the patriot and statesman. May
the dying admonitions of the great man of the
nation he now calmly considered and regarded!
The last scenes of his public life were among
rlio mnct ln-illi.-int of his Inn?' and arduous CU
reer of service. Knfcchled by sickness, liit-lj
physical powers were prostrate, and dentil sceiu-H
ed to advance so rapidly and so unexpectedly.0
that it was feared lie would be stricken ere per-Eg
mittcd to make his final effort in behalf of thoscH
great principles of justice, truth, and equity, teH
which Ids life, as a statesman, had been devoted.R
He rallied?the crisis demanded such an effort;H
and, under the Providence of(iod, he wasena-U
bled to make it. The South expected it, andH
hoped ; the North expected it, and was held iiiH
awe; the patriots-of the country everywhcreD
expected it, and with confidence looked forwarilB
to the enunciation of the views of the houcstlj
and true patriot. The masterly production ofg
the head and heart of a great and good man isfl
now before the country, and its illustrious au-B
tborlias been taken from her councils ere hen
could witness its effects upon the. minds audg
hearts of his fellow-countrymen. jjj

Sir,?I have made use of Dr Osgood's India

its salutary effects when used by others. I
believe it a most valuable medicine for the cure of
Fever and Ague; and also, that its pfop^r use will
prove a most certain PRF.vESTATfVF against its recurrence,
to which persons who have been afflicted
with it are liable. Very respect fulls,

Strange! That so many who are afflicted with a
Cough that in gradually wearing them down, and slowly,
but surely stealing thcin into that dreadful disease, Cons
sumption?that disease which enrries off thousands daily,
nfe doing nothing, or what is worse than nothing, gorging
themselves with nostrums, that are pulled to the skies for
cures they ore said to have efll-cted on some foreign or unknown
persons, when they can Ik- positively cured by using
L>r. Rogers's Cnm|>otind Syrup of Liverwort and Tar,
which still continues to effect the most wonderful cures
ever recorded in the annals of medicine. A fact which is
proved hy reference to the vast number of certificates
which may be seen by calling on the agent, James R.
