It is often heard of at the North hut never seen al the South. I have often heard persons express the greatest apprehension and dread of the negroes, and they could hardly believe me wheh I have told them with what perfect fearlessness of nil insurreetionary movements I have travelled and . dwelt among them. Even now, at this present | writing, I am upon a rice plantation, thirty miles frorn Charleston, and insolated Irorn neigh- | bors, where there are upwards of 200 slaves, j nod about half a dozen whites, including wo-j men and children, occupying two houses, as open and free as a New England farm house, I and as free from all fear of being disturbed hy : the negroes, as the owner of that farm house is : of his own children. How is it at tho North ? There he is constantly told that in everything hut his color he is equal to his j ' white brother," hut in all their actions the ( said white brother takes care to impress it up- > on the "inan of color" that he is not a white | man, and never will lie treated as one. The i consequence is he is discontented and unhappy, [ and sighing fir freedom from his degraded po- I silion in society ten times more earnestly than , slaves sigh for freedom in the South.
