We have nothing to object to the tone and temper of Gov. Fish, of New York on this vexed question, lie is courteous enough. Be 11 Ordained by the Intendanl and Wardens of the Town of Camden, and by the authority of the same, That hereafter annually, during the month of January in each year, the following Taxes shall be levied and paid into the Treasury of the Town of Camden, for the support of the government thereof: 1. That there shall be levied ah annual tax of one dollar nn each and every negro slave hired out in the said town, for moie than one month at a time, to be paid by the owner, if a citizen, or by the person who brings such slave into the town, if owned by a non-resident of 6aid town* 2. That there shall be levied an annual tax of two dollars on each and every negro slave mechanic working in the said town for more than six months at a time, who may belong to non-resi? dents of the said town, which tax shall bo paid by the person for whose benefit and use sucb mechanic shall work in the said town. 3. And on all other negroes or slaves belonging to citizens of the town, or living therein, the sum of fifty cents each; to be paid by ihe owner or agent of the owner. 4. On all goods, wares and merchandize, on sale in said tvwn, on tbe first day of January in each year, twenty cents on every hundred dollars value thcieof. 5: Twenty cents on every hundred dollars of the value of all town lots, houses and real estate situated in the said town, according to the value thereof, assessed by commissioners appointed at the close of each year, for tnat purpose, by the i un ii wuijlii wi vauiuciu 6. Twenty cents on every hundred dollars of gross professional iucome received by any person having an office in said town; excepting on the income of School-masters, School, mistresses, and Ministers of the Gospel. 7. On all fr??e negroes under fifteen years of age fifty cents, between fifteen and fifty, three dollars, and over fifty years old, one dollar. 8 On each pleasure carriage drawn by one l.orse, where only one horse is kept for that purpose, one dollar; and on each and every carriage drawn by two horses, where only two horses are kept for that purpose, I wo dollars; regulating the tax by the number of horses commonly kept for drawing a carriage or carriages. 9. On all vehicles, wagons, carts or drays, em. ployed in or about the town to haul for hire tor more than one day at a time, drawn by three or more horsog or mules, five dollars: drawn bv two horses or mules, two do'lars and fifty cents; cirawn by one horse or mule, one dollar and fifty cents. 10. On each and every break wagon, owned and used in or about the town, five dollars. 11. One fourth of one per cent on the assessed value of every improved or occupied lot in the said town, whereon there shall net be a good well of water, so that water can be drawn therefrom conveniently, as a well tax, which tax shall not exceed four dollars, to be paid by the owner of any one lot, 12. All persons liable to perform patrol duty, shall pay into the Town Treasury two dollars and fifty cents as an exemption therefrom, during the year the said tax may be bo' paid. 13. All persons iiable to work on the roads, shall be allowed to commute therefor by paying two dollars and fifty cents for each person so liable. 14. "The owners or possessors of dogs who shall have dugs on their premises in the said town, on the first day of January in each year, or thereafter during the year, 6hali pay an annual tax of one dollar on each and every dog so kept within the said town, 15. That all returns of property and information to assess taxes shall be made on oath to the Town Treasurer, and all persons liable to taxation^ shall give full information to the Treasurer respecting the property subject to taxation, when thereunto required. 16. All Ordinances, and parts of Ordinances, repugnant hereto, shall be and tbe same are hereby repealed. Ratified in Council, this twenty sixth day ot December, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine, and in the year ot American Independence, tbe seventy iourui. JAMES R.
