The slavery question lias been the principal
> topic in both Houses to-day?the topic of debate
in the Senate, and of action in the House.
_ The ball was opened in the Senate by Mr. i
Benton, who presented a memorial from New j
Mexico, asking for the establishment of a civil ;
government, the exclusion of slavery, and the
non-mutilation of their territory by in corpora, i
ting any portion of it with Texas. He ihonglu
this was a very reasonable, an 1 proper, and I
pertinent petition, aud that it ought to be referred
to the Committee on Territories.
Mr. Calhoun, on the other hand, thought it
was an insolent and untenantable petition, and
that it came under that class of Abolition petitions,
the question of receiving which had alw:tys

A River Plantation for Saie.
For sale, the Plantation lying on the west side
of the YVateree River, within tivc miles of the town
of Camden, formerly a portion of the Estate Plantation
of Duncan McRa, and known as number 2
