Northern Whig alii es, and what dothej^ex [
pact to get from theml
These are grave questions and they are not
idly asked. On one point especially, we feel
anxious for an answer, and for no party purposes
do we ask it. It the Northern Whigs insist
on parsing, and do pass the Wilmot Proviso,
what course will the Southern Whigs take?? .
It is not wise to postpone this question and |
leave the answer to be given when the event j
shall have happened. It is well for Southern I
tn iftnk this mattpr in the lace and de- |
vise at once the course to be adopted.

? Beware of Covntf.rfeits.?We have lie.
fore us a spurious Twenty Dollar Note of the
. Bank of Georgetown, and understand that a
' number of them are in circulation iu Columbia
and in Alabama.
To guard the public, as much as possible !
against thero. we will explain, as far as in our
f?ower, how the counterfeit can be distinguish- !
ed from the genuine. The paper on which the
counterfeit is printed is dark and harsh?the
vignette of the female at the top and centre, and i
more especially, the ship in the distance, are
badly executed, the numerals XX, and the gen. :
eral engraving has also a darker shade. The
i signature of the Cashier is well done, and that
of the .President passably, all hough more lightly
written on the spurious than the genuine. The
counterfeit is trade payable to A. G. Rose.
This gentleman is the Cashier of the Charleston
Bank, and the name has been probably inserted
in this case with deceptive views.
To thosff who are not critical in their know], i
edge as to counterfeits, and have no genuine j
note of the same denomination before them; we j
u-ou/d suggest that the paper and the vignette!
at*] ship are the mint distinguishable marks by |
H-hich to judge whether a note is counterfeit or :
not.
The spurimis hill is so well executed that it j
will require much care to prevent imposition, j

Gkx. T/ lor's Reception of tub Election
News.?A letter from New Orleans to the
Baltimore Sun says:
' General Taylor was in Baton Rouge j
when he beard the result of the election in ;
Pennsylvania, and enough from other States to
determine, without doubt the fact that he had
been elected President of the United Stales. '
He took the fact of his elevation to the highest
office inthe woild with composure, exhibiting
much coolness and deliberation.
^ "He left Baton Rouge soon after the result
was know, on board a steamboat, fir bis plan- 1
tation in Mississippi. While on the passage he
was accosted by a stranger, a democrat who was
not aware he wa? speaking to the President
elect, and thpy commenced talking politics
speculatingabout thecieetion. the merits of the i
candidates, &e. The stranger told him that
old Zack was good enough, but he did not think
him qualified for the, high office of President.
He also asked the General if lie was a Taylor
man, to which he replied: 'Not much of a one,
that he had not voted for hirn on account of hi*
family, and more especially on account of hi<
old lady being somewhat opposed to Old Zack
going to Washington.'
'"At this juncture a gentleman stepped up. accosted
the General and called him hy name.
The stranger soon smelt a rat, and af er op* ning
his eyes tolerably wide, walked olf, consid
eraldy confused.
The General is in good health, and looks
unconcerned as usual."
' Jake," said a rather seedyish-lonking colored
biped, whose legs like knobbed batidmos,
vitalized a pair of shinny bombazine trovvsers,
**Jake, have you got a black *e*kit to spa re (or

To the Voters oi Lancaster District.
Fellow Citizens: Since my name has been used
as a cand date for Clerk of the Court of Lancaster
District, an erroneous report has been circulated,
which I feel it my duty to correct.
The report is, that I came out for the purpose

false. After strong solieitatit lis from many
friends, I consented to come before the people as j
a candidate for the above named office, and my j
only motive for coming out was to be elected, and i
not to injure or break down any candidate.
Fellow-citizens, you have once trusted me with ;
an office, which 1 hope you have never had cause I
to regret, and for which I tender you my sincere ;
thanks; and should f be so fortunate as to he your ;

human frame is liable. The o|>orniion of a single bottle,
which routs SL is sufficient to satisfy any patient?if not
altogether too far gone with the disease?of this fact,' and
even a single dose gives e\ idenco of its extraordinary influence
in arresting and eradicating the malady by the immediate
relief which it afford*. This is no quack or secret
remedy. Dr. Hastings its discoverer, is one of the |
most eminent physicians of the age, and has made a full j
disclosure of its history, and all its component parts to the
world, not wishing to incur the responsibility of confining
to himself, for the sake of profit, a secret which was calculated
to do such universal good. And such has been the
wonderful result of its operations, that the London Lancet,
Medical 1 intcs, and tlm m^t eminent 1 'hynoians of both
hemispheres. an- anxiously ratlins upon snller<-rs to liave j
