Mr. Collamer moved a reconsideration of the resolution by which the House yesterday fued the daily hour of meeting at 10 instead of 11 A. X. Mr Stephens moved to lay the motion on the table, and ou this the yeas and nav? were or dewd, and resulted, yeas 64, nays 77. From the Charleston Mercury. THE PRESIDENTIAL QUESTION. Mb. Editor: The question seeins to ho very fit we rally agitated in our community whether we shall vc/te at the nest election for Gen. Cass or Gen. T?ylor. Thete is a higher question for South Carolina to settle before site can give bar vote, and that question is one of principle, n?A of mew. If Gen. Cass does not coino up to our pritici pies and we. refuse bitn our vote, well; but how will we sustain oar principles by casting our vote for the Whig party without pledge? We may talk of the Hero of Buena Vi-ta (nud who is nmu/1 A( him as a military leader?} as much ns we please; if we vole for him without pledge, we abandon principle, and place ourselves prostrate at the foot of the Whig party. He is the candidate of that party, with .Sir. Fillmore, the Abolitionist, bis coadjutor, running on the name ticket with him; and without any pledge to the contrary, the Whigs have a right to pre mime that his principle* an- theirs, fwcause he is with bis own consent and approval their candidate. What right, then, ill the name of common reason and common sense, have we to u?sun>e, without a word from him to give us ground to go on, precisely the conlraryl Surely the whig* have, the best right to assume that he who is their candidate represents their principles, especially if he himself say* not a word to gainsay that opinion. And we are hound, unless we are determined to shut our eyes, to see that he i * prima facie against us, and neither part nor lot with usand our party principles; neither can he be presumed to have, from the very position be occupies. It does seem, therefore, to us, that to vote for General Taylor, without a pledge of any kind, is to swallow almost the whole of the Whig principles at a wnlo. and of course to abandon our own. Mrs. Adkins was about ti.rce score and ten years old, and had been a worthy and an acceptable member of the M. E. Church, for nearly half a century. During the last few years of het life, she was very much afflicted, but she bore the affliction with becoming christian patience and resignation to the wi'l of her Heavenly Father. Ol her Chritian deportment much might be said, but suffice it to say, she was the dutiful wife, the tender and affectionate mother, and the quiet and peaceable neighbor?in all her relations in life an exemplary chiistian, (her last words abundantly proves the above stated facts,) which was "glory, glory to Cod."
