fishery on the Pacific, the fur trade of the Northwest

advantages which Mexico enjoys for

In 1803, the revenue of Mexico exceeded
$20,000,000. The revenue of our Union was
then but $11,000,000. In 1803, the mines of'
the United States produced neither coal, iron,
gold, silver or lead, of any appreciable value;
hut the average of the gold and silver of Mcx

At this period, the star of Mexico was in the ;
ascendant. The severe restrictions of Spain
upon her commerce, which had restrained her
intercourse with Europe for two centuries to
a single point in Spain, and usually to a fleet
once in three years, had baen modified, and
her commerce begun to expand*
Har coinage had increased from Si 1,604,
815 in 1765, to $27,165,888 in 1803; and her
revenue from $6,141,981 in 1765, to 820,- '
200,000 in 1803.
Nor was this all; for the exuberance of Mexi- :
co flowed into the weaker and inf'i ior colonies
of Spain, and supplied their deficiencies.

included the cost of her army of 10,000 Spanish
troops, and after lemi'tiug to Spain a surplus of

It might not astonish ux to l^arn the sandy
shores of Florida absorbed a portion of the surplus
wealth of Mexico; But when we read
that the rich alluvial soil of Louisiana, now ex
porting iIs annual millions of sugar, rott'on,
lead an^t provisions; the fertile Island of Cuba
and Porte Rico, now the most prolific of West
Indies, were thus dependant upon the surplus
wealth of Mexico, we may comprehend in some
degree the extent of her resources?resources
which enable her to advance in prosperity while
thus annually disbursing, without returns, $10,000.01)0
in other States and Colonies.

CLEVELAND'S
Indian Southern Vegetable Deobstruent
The plants from which this Medicine is compounded
have been known to and used by the Aborgines
of the Southern States long before tbe
first settlement of the country. The first settlers
acquired from the Indians in their immediate vicinity
a knowledge of their very extraordinary medicinal
properties and made use of them, separate or
compounded with others combined. The recipe
front which this medicine is compounded has been
used by a respectable family for more than fifty
years with great success, in treating all diseases of
the Skin and impurities of tbe Blood.
It is composed of four plants indigenous toijl
vicinity of Charleston, S. C. The plants have been
gathered with great care by on experienced Botanist
and the medicine is now prepared in a scientific
manner, and by a new chemical process of extracting
the medicinal virtues of plants. Most medicines
of this class are administered indiscriminately
without regard to disease, restriction in food,
diet or exe'eise and are so mixed up and disguised
th-it their active principles are rendered entirety
inert or are destroyed. Not so this edicine. It
contains the curative virtues of the four plants
without disguising their natural taste.
I would now inform those who desire to use tbis
medicine that it would be entirely useless todo
so without strictly adhering to the directions.,, v
It is not pretended that this medicine shall cure
all diseaes that humanity is heir to, but a few of
the most distressing ones, it will be found, will
yield like magic to its restorative energies. I
know that the idea of a new medicine to come into
competition with the many preparations of Sarsaparilla
and oth^r alterative medicines, may soeui
to many presumptuous, or to say the least absurd.
The proprietor places it before the public to stand
or fall upon its own merits.
The list of diseases for which it is recommerffi.
ed and which it is sincerely believed will cure, afe
as follows: Scrofula and its consequent diseases,
viz: primary, secondary, tertiary and consecutive
Venerial Diseases; enlargement of the Joints,
Glands, and Ligaments; Rheumatism, Neuralgia
and all Eruptions of the Skin and diseases arising
from an impure state of the Blood.
