Catastrophe in Moore.?We learn from |> a gentleman just from Moore county, that a H ?. young man named Andrew Idol, (sometimes o called Andrew Muse) was killed near Carthage, n Momlay 2lst Feb'y. He and his uncle. Ceo. tr Muse, were out shooting wild turkeys, about ,v daylight, and discovered some turkerys at a distnnce; when the yoang man, who was sepera- : ei - red by some distance Irom his uncle, got between G him and the turkeys, and was creeping upon ai a:, (bent, when his uncle, (as he slated in evidence) ? supposed it was a turkey ho saw, walking on a h?S. (it no* being quite day-light) fired at the ; object, and immediately heard a scream; and j rN on running to the spot, found he had shot his 1 p< nephew, the ball entering his right side, not far i S : irotn the nipple, and passing through the body, j it lie died in a few minutes. ! b Although we have published a number of case* of these deaths in wild turkey hunting, the ! same carelessness seems to prevail, s ' % North Carolinian. ui X * . - A Tkbriblb Situation.?The following ! w distressing particulars of the loss of a mail-stage near ""Montreal, we find in the papers of that .? city: ^ There were but two passengers, Mr. Ogdeii, ci of Quebec, and Mr. Russell, of Ancaster.? When the leaders plunged into the water, Mr. ri Ogden and Mr. Russell both leaped from the stage; the first made good his footing on the tli main ice, but Mr- Russell's cloak unfortunately got entangled, and before he could extricate si himself, be found himself in deep water* i He clung to the stage, but as the night was ui dark, be could sec nothing of his companions. A country editor |0 says, that a girl was asked, not long since, to f;i unite herself in the silken tie, to a brisk chap, j,r who named May in his proposals. Harney are at present w in that city. The Colonel was at Washington at last last accounts. We learn, says the editor of the Gazette, that his lady has made a do nation of $12,000 to the new college about to lie built at that place under the auspices of the Jesuits.?N. O. Picayune, Feb. 18. 1 er Honeymoon.?The origin ol this word is so little known, and yet so highly interesting that we are constrained to gire an account of it. It is traceable to a Teutonic origin. Among gt the Teutones was a favorite drink calied me re theglin. It was made of honey, and much like te present mead o{ the same name in Europea countries. The same beverage was in use mong Saxons, as well as another, moral 'hich was also made of honey, but flavored 'ith mulberries. The honeyed drinks were ?ed in great abundance at festivals. Among le nobility the marriage was celebrated (or a hole month, which was called a moon, during hich the festival board was well supplied ith the honey drink. Hence this month of stivai was called honah moon, or honey moon, hich means a festival. Death rr Major Webster.?The Amer:an Star, published at the city of Mexico, of st February, has the following intelligence, le very latest from the capital:?We regret to ear the death, at San Angel, of Major Edard Webster, of the Massachusetts Regiment F Volunteers. He was the youngest son of le Hon. Daniel Webster. He left his native tale a year since as the senior Captain in the legitnent, and was subsequently chosen to the ost which lie he.'d at the time of his death, le did more than any other man towards (he rganization of the Regiment, and was emienlly popular. Ilis death will carry a pang > many a heart. CHARLESTON MARKET. Cotton.?After a week of considerable acvity, the cotton market has relapsed into a jmparativcly quiet state. It will be recollecid that there was a good demand for the article n lust Saturday, the 19lli ult., which was free' met hy holders at former prices; as the week dvanced, however, factors exhiblcd an increa. d anxiety to sell, and owing to the quantity f cotton offering at the time, prices receded a ttle, establishing as a quotation 7 a 7 1 8, for liddling fair; and 7 1-4 a 7 3-8c. for the fair ad fully fair grades. Having been relieved y heavy operations, a strong effort was made y sellers just prior to the date of our former tport to recover their lost ground, but purcha* rs could not be brought to terms, and the inrket, which for a day or two was very quirt, osed at the following quotations, viz:?Oraiary 6 1-4 a 6 1-2; middling to good middling 5-8 6 7-8; middling fair 7 a 7 1-S; lair and illy fair 7 1 4 a 7 3 8; good fair 7 1-2 a 7 3 4; ad choice ?. The week under tcview has non quiet, and has passed off without prodding any change in the state of affairs us they listed at the lime we made up our previous reart. On Saturday last the article was in some quest, and the operations would doubtless ive been heavy, but dealers were unable to >me to terms, the one parly claiming rates hich the other refused to give, and this contcnon has been carried on to a greater or less itent throughout the week. The demand has in principally on the middling fair and fair and illy fair sort*-; but the actual transactions show r> improvement in prices, and we therefore mtinue our quotations of Saturday morning :st, to which we would with confidence refer r a fair criterion of the market at the close : business yesterday. The transactions are * follows:?Saturday 800 bales, Monday 624, uesday 700, Wednesday 1241, Thursday 13* 3, and yesterday 100?making an aggregate f 4940 bales, against the receipt in the same me of 7234 hales. 3 INFLUENZA AND CONSUMPTION. The sudden and frequent changes of weather which we have experienced recently, from hot to cold and from wet to dry, have been peculiarly favorable for the contracting of Coughs and Colds, and for the laying the foundation of that dread disease, Consumption; and we think we have never known so much harking and wheezing as we have witnessed among our friends and acquaintances for the last few weeks. Nor have we pone entire ly tree: wc naa a can com accompanieu uy a uuru, dry, hacking cough, which was a source of great annoiancc, and began to he of considerable apprehension, when a medical friend advised us to make use of Hull's Cough Lozenges, (and we write this paragraph to adaise our friends to do the same,) they being in his opinion "ihe most effectual remedy for Coughs an I Colds wiihin his knowledge," and after a fair trial of them, wc are happy to say that we concur most fully in that "opinion," and most cordially recommend them to any of our friends who are or may be suffering from any of the complaints incident to Hard Colds, as a remedy effectual in its action and speedy in its operations. We do not know who Dr. Hull may he; but he will please accept our thanks, and we think he deserves the thanks of the community for placing within their reach so excellent a remedy for Pulmonary complaints as his Cough Lozenges.
