Proviso in the Massachusetts Whig Convention
This circumstance I thought was well calcula
ted to attract the attention of Southern men
In addition to this, when the voting commence*
In the House, the Abolitionists were found vo
ting against Mr. Winthrop. My attention w.t
arrested by the fact. 1 saw at once the Aboli
tlonists were playing a game in Congress tht
precise game so skilfully played in the States o
New Hampshire and New York, viz : acting a:
a balance party, and though small in numbers
pontrivinar to control nfl-iirs. Mv attention be
ingthus roused, I nude inquiries of the precisf
mode of action by which the Abolitionists pro
posed to effect thpir object, and I did learn tha
they had proposed to i\lr. Winthrop to vote foi
hint a^speaker, provided he would give then
the organization of the important Committees;
tho Judiciary, Territories, and District of Co
lumbia, upon Abolition principles, with a view
to abolish slavery in this District, prevent its introduction
into any new Territory, repeal the
act which cotnpells the return of fugitive slaves
and defeat the law of my own State in relation
to the entrance of colored persons into our limits.
That Mr. Winthrop preferred to lose the
Speakership rathpp than comply with these
atringent demands. This fict was learnt during
the progress of the third ballot.
The danger to me was manifest. The Democrats
would not vote for a Whig, an ! therefore
a Southern Whig could not be elected. The
Northern Whigs would not vote for a Democrat
from the South; because, with few exceptions
the Northern Whigs are opposed to slavery.

Southern man?he he Whig or Democrat.
How then could the House he organized ?
In one mode only: by the Northern and Wilmot
Proviso men merging every consideration
into Abolition, and electing an Abolitionist ot
Wilmot Proviso man upon the condition proposed
to and rejected by M r. Winthrop.
1 send you the correspondence between Mr.
Palfrey and Mr. Winthrop. This correspondence
will substantiate these facts; and now I
ask, ought I, with this knowledge, to have placed
the organization of the House in the hand:
of the Abolitionists? Ought I, a sentinel on an
outpost, to have hesitated, in an unexpected approach
of danger, to defend the great, by fit
the greatest of all, interest, committed to m * by
a generous constituency? I did not hesitate.
All party considerations Hided before the deep,
intense, burning necessity. I at one? acted,
acted promptly, and I grant decisively. MWinthropwas
elected, and the Abolitionists defeated.
The committees have been properly organized
and Mr. Pa'frey, Mr. (Ji tidings, and Mr. Tuck
excluded from the important committees tin y
were so anxious to control.
I have thus acted; and I have the satisfaction
to know that when I explained the grounds on
wfeich I acted, I have the approval of those
whose judgments I deem eminent upon such
subjects. The times are full of perils?perils
to the country generally?perils to the South
emphatically. I act tind w a fearful respond,
bjlity. If in the exercise of that responsibility
I have incurred the disapprobation of the edi
lor of tho Mercury, I regret it. It will certain,
ly bo pleading if my explanation shall stilisfy
him. If not, I mint submit with that meekness
which ought always to characterise a Repretentative.
Your obedient serv.inN
I. E. HOLMES.

Mr. S. W. Fuwle?Dear Sin Two years ago, the
past winter, a sudden and violent attack upon iny
lungs by exposure to cold, confined mc to my room
and bed for several vvocks; and when I rccovo cJ. I
was so much oppressed by difficulty in breathing, thai
I was incapable of rapid walking and violent exercise
and often was unable to sleep or rest upon a bed a'
night. The suffering was frequently extreme, an;
judging from tlic iricfficacy of the remedies used, I
supposed the disease incurable. Being persuaded tr
try a bottle of Wislar's Balsam of Wild Cherry, with
out Uio least confidence in its efficacy or that of any
other prescription, no one can fully understand my sur
prise and joy, when I found the difficulty almost en,
tircly removed before one bottle was used up. Having
a mortal aversion to medicine, and seldom using it in
any form, nothing but sympathy with my fcllow.suf
