EQUAL RIGHTS.
The Democratic party of Georgia have nomi
nated Messrs. Colquitt, Black and Coopef, as
their candidates for Congress, to supply the vacancies
occasioned by the resignation of Messrs.
Nesbitt, Dawson and Ai.ronn. The gentle- j
men nominate^ (says the Athens Banner,) are j
well known to the people, and the peculiar position
in which they stand, entitle them to the confidence
of the Democracy. Driven from their
former political associations because they pre
ferred principle to party; proscribed by 1 he
.Whigs because ihev could not conscientiously,
oppose "Mr. Van Buren's adminis'ration, they
presented themselves last year before the people,
and were taken up and supported by our
friends. But through She potent influence of
hard cider, and other equally senseless device
they, in common with our whole ticke', wore defeated.
Since then time has been had for re-,
flection; the people are "comparatively cool; and;
it has been judged expedient to see whether public
opinion sustains these gentlemen in the patriotic
course tliey last year pursued. This is' no
doubt the reason why they have been nominated
as the candidates of the party, and if our parly is
what it was a faw weeks ago, th?y will return
them to the seats in Congress from .which they
were driven by Whig proscription. i

the parties indebted'to it, to depreciate the liabilities

profit by the fall hi the discharge of their obligations
to the Bank. For'that purpose a powerful i
combination V.aas got up by the former conduct-1
ors of the Bank and their friends, having i:i view
the sole object of discharging their debts to the I
Bank, at the expons^f.the deluded holders of
its liabilities This lias boon backed by other j
parties for purposes of speculatio n In illustration
of this position, we will give the recent
movement in U. S. Bank no'es. It is well known
that during the past week the circulation bills of
the Baak rose 17 cents discount to fib a 70 cents
on the dollar in two days?a rise of fib or 3D per
cent. This fact ways siducicnl to show that a
corner had been gofTup in it. At the time of the
suspension'of.the United States Bank it is well
known that theXJir.ard Bank was the only ir.sti-'
tution in Philadelphia that held none of its bills.
Its cashier, Mr. Lewis, plumed himself for his
sagacity a good deal upon the occasion, and used
strong efforts to raise'his own institution at the
expense, oi. inc jauen monster. clique- was
then formed with certain parties in this city; Mr.
liiddlc, Reuben M. Whitney, and others, in
Phi I a la'phii, with the N itional Gazette, remodeled
for their organ, to decry the liabilities,,
heavy sales of the notes at GO a 90 (lays were
nude in both places. It then apppcared that the
Girard i3ajnk was in possession of 3 to $-!( 19,900.
of the notes'ofthe United Sta'es flnnk. As the
Girard had nonaof these notes at the date-of suspension,
she must either have ac.qtiired them by
purchase or by special deposite, from individuals
havingobligations maturing at the U. S. Bank.
These no'-es were leu! out to brokers, who, by

value of tlie no es. At this rale, Mr. Diddle
purchased and paid into the Dank over !$ 100,000

assignment within a short time. Notwithstanding
their payments, the bills continued at a low
rate until one day this week, when the Girard
Bank called in the notes lent. The result was
that the notes were not to be had, and the price
rose go per cent, in a day, and would have gone
up to par, but the borrowers of the notes become
panic struck, and two brokers went to
Philadelphia, to ask for time to buy them up.?
This was granted, and the matter being kept

is noty to buy up the notes (juictly as fast as
possible, but the.probability is that the notes are
not to be had. This operation in'the notes has
had a powerful -chert upop the stock of the Hank,
both here and in Europe, as when its value is
discussed, the great depreciation in the notes is
appealed to as conclusive evidence that nothing
remains to .the stockholder. The terrible destruction
of property that has taken place, through

On Tuesday last, the case of the persons indicted
for a riot in front of the President's House, on
the night of the 10th of August, was called for
trial. The District: Attorney stated to the Courtthai
