8L1CK AMI THE COLbEOR PRFSIH
H?PB>T?TWO SCENES PROM REAL LIFE.
Some score of years since. the President
9 Bka well known College in Kentucky, was
while sitting in his study, J??ton- I
SI 9vthc entrance of a singular visitor. !
w is a hov of some seventeen
??? 9*7^1,!^ uncouth in his appearance, (
ffl |weseuiu hurnespun, with thicK clumshoos
air hw feet, an old tattered felt hat
f^Nits head, surmounting amass of uncombed
?}yur, which relieved swarthy ami sun-burnt
features, marked by eyes quick and sparkling,
but vacant and ine.vpressive, from the want
^ of education. The wfiole appearance of the
k^-.youth was that of an untaught, uncultivated j
poughbov.
The President. an affa'ile and a venerable
Inan, inquired into the business of the person
who stood before hiin.
"If you please, sir," said the ploughboy, j
with aJl the hesitancy of an uneducated rustic
?"if you pease, sir, I'd like to get some
^ larnin." F heard you had a college in these
parts, and I thought if I would work a spell
for you. you would help me now aud then in
gcttin' an edicaliou."
M Well, nay young friend," replied the Pres.
ident, "I scarcely see any way in which you ,
might be useful to us. The request is some- I
thing singular "
* Why, f e^n bring Water, cut wood, or
black your buois," interrupted the boy, his
eye brightening in his earnestness. " I want
to get an ? duration?I want to makesomething
of myself. I don't keer how hard I work,
only so as f get an education. I want?"
He paused, at a loss for words lo express
his ideas. But there was a language in the ;
expressive lip and glancing eye; there was a
language in his manner?in the tone in which
the words were spoken that appealed at once
to the feelings of the President.
He determined to try the sincerity oi wie
youth.
"I'm afraid, my young friend, that I can
flo nothing for you. 1 would like to ass'sl
you, but see no way in which you can be useful
to us at present."
The President resumed his book. In a
. moment he glanced at the ploughboy, who si- i
L lent and mute, stood holding the handle of the
Auk. He fingered his rough hat confusedly
Iwith one hand?his eyes were downcast, and j
Ins upper hp quivered and trembled as though j
he were endeavoring to repress strong and I
sudden feelings of intense disappointment, j
The effort was but halt successful. A tear .

I CAROLINA ECII.PSE* |
THIS highly bred and much adrairtd horde ;
I will stand lht? present season at or near Ben- i
j netaville, atone or two oilier places in MarlI
borough District, and at the stables of Juhn i
I McLean in Robeson County, N. C.
He is a red aoirel. without white except a .
small star; live years old, fifteen ami a half i
hands higli, and cf extraordinary bone and f
muscle. In color, size, bone, sinew and rnus. J
cle, he greatly resembles his grandsire, tho *
famous American Eclipse, ad mitred 011 all | h
hands to be one of the best horses, if not tho j
very best, ever owned in this country, whether
native o^urerted. It may be stated as
evid'o^of tn^Ktraordinarv constitution of
/tnierWn Eclipse, now standing in Kentucky, 1
that although ticenty-eight years old, "he is ;
still** says the N. Y. Spirit of the Times "in ;
possession of fine health and betrays few indi
cation* of hia advanced age and long service. |
There are very few instances of such vigor at :
hia age."
Carolina Eclipse is put at the very low price \
' of $8 the single leap, payab e at the time.4
$13, the season, payable at the c'ose of the
aeason ; and $15 for insuring, payable when
the mare ia ascertained to be in foal, or when ;
she ia traded ; with 50 cents to the grooin.? ; 1
His form, strength, and blood eminently claim j '
lor him the attention of persons who wish to j
raise horses 44for all work,"?for the saddle, !'
light draught, and farm or plantation use. And j
the low price at which he is put will enable !
any who wish good horses to avail themselves
of his services. Though a horse of great life j |
andsp<rii. he is of quiet teini>er and tractable j *
disposition. Great care will be taken to 1 j
avoid accidents, but no liability w ill be incurred
for any which may happen.
PEDIGREE.

most of the very best crosses of which this {

Although mere racers, are not the horses :

. 1832, two mile heats, he distanced his compe:
titor the second heat. In the fall of the same
| year, at Milledgville, Ga. three mile heats,

^ ! fared him to run too near the rim of the inside
i track, against which he stumbled and fell.
r causing him to lose i he race. The same week
* at the same place he beat all his riva s in 3
mile heats, the best 3 in 5. The next spring,
[ at Lawrenceville, Va. he ran four mile heats,
i j with Ironctte, .Anvil, Row-Galley, and Walter
. I Cook. Although he was in bud condition,
| having not fully recovered frotn the effects of
n j distemper, and owing to his rider being sick,
5 he was obliged to carry 5 lb. over weight, he
r lost the first heat only by the neck, and the
* second by only a few feet, Ironette leading
. him; Row. Galley and Walter distanced, and
1 Anvil (afterwards sold for #10 000) barely
, saving his distance. At New Market, Va,,
the next season, he started with eleven other
horses, and led them all the first heat. But
his feet being tender from a rec< nt founder, he
* was then withdrawn. Two weeks after,
s \ wards, his feet yet sore, he was barely beaten
by the fine racer, Duke of Or sans, in four inilo
e heats at Baltimore. His manager still, with
q great cruelty and lack of judgment, continu.
tng to run him in this condition of his feet, he
let down in one of his fore legs, in four mile
V heats at Norfolk, two weeks after his Balti"
more race, and was withdrawn trom the turt.
1 But bis trials most abundantly proved his
1$ strength, speed and bottom, with exiraordinsiy
,: powers of endurance,
I In good condition he never was beaten; in
.! bad condition, when he ought never to have
j been run, he always won by his performance
* ! the admiration of every judge.
i | The half sister of Festival?Col. Ilamp- '
3 i ton's Fanny, by Eclipse?is the only racer of !
, the first clang in the United States which has !
not been beaten within this last six months, by !
| some younger aspirant after fame. Besides '
* twice receiving forfeits, one from 10 competi.
r tors, she has run at least 11 races and never j
was beaten. Lightness ai.d want of strength
the objection tu racers as work horses. But
this objection does not apply to the Eclipse
stock.
