STABLING MILCH COWS.
We have been much surprised, si (he
increased quantity of milk, cuwe afford
from being stabled in winter, which some
recent experiments have proved. A near
neighbor suffered his cows from necessi*
ty, to run in the open air, during the
eady part of the winter, and. as usual,
their milk greatly diminished, in qunnti.
tV, although they were well fed on hav,
and mangel wortzcl. He then stnlded
J,hem, without changing their food, and
Saking care of course to give them plenty
of clean litter. He lately informed us,
as to the result, that his cows now gave
Kim just double the milk they did when
rjcposed. A similar experiment by the
writer, has proved nei.rly equally succ ssful.?New

Mr. G.irduer in the Tern e a e Sen t ;
in reply to an objection to granti: g bou... j

porous, ail other pursuits will he so. He
pointed to the example of France under
Henry IV when the great Sully was
prime minister, who offered liberal premaims
to encourage trie production of
silk ; enlightened policy then established,
and subsequently continued in Franco
hud brought the silk manufacture to a
high state of perfection. That country
now exports silk fabrics to the amount of
twenty-five millions of dollars, of which
about eleven mi.lions arc imported into t
the United Slates. He ariver od to Russia,
which, until t! e reign of Peter the !
great, was hut half civilized,?thai inon. I
arch aware of the advantages wnich j
vo'ild arise from agriculture, gave boun- I
tos to encourage it, and the result was,'
that men of industry and enterprise were i
invited to Russia, and they inspired a i
love of agriculturd and its kindred pur- j
suits. Catherine, II, in I97d, establish
?mI agricultural societies, whose influence '
was most beneficial'y fell throughout the j
extent of the vast empire which acknowl. j

edged her sway. Ausirm j#u ISUCU ill., j
anine plan with similar success, and medals
were distributed (tearing the iuscrip.
tion, "the art which nourishes all other i
arts." Sweden was only half civilized I
until Charles XII, established agricultural
Societies, which stimulated to industry,
and to the improvement of Agricultural j
science. Great Britian presents h str:- !
king example of the benefits resulting :
from proper attention to this important j
occupation. In that country lii??ral up.
prop'iations have been made bv parliaituent
IV un time to tunc, to agricultural
societies, and the reports of theco fditioii
of the agricultural districts are I id annu- !
ally before parliament. The protection
and encouragement thus given, has 1
greatly advanced the pr<?s|>eritv of that !
country, as well in agricultural as in the

tins country annually import stock from ,
England to improve the breed o our own.
