MJgl fl?? the 25 February, three howitzers and a patty I of Sepoys were landed at Chuas-pee. from the J Nemesis and the boats of the squadron. s ^Shortly afterwards, the whole forts were in t possesion of the British forces. Official notifications were issued in the course of the day; one by the Plenipotentiary intimating the a capture of the torts, the other by the Coin- n modore, authorising merchant vessels to pro- t ceed to the Bogue. rJ The number of prisoners taken at Chuen- ^ pee is estimated at 1000, and the killed and ^ wounded on the side of the Chinese are said ^ to be very numerous. No despatches had been received in Canton P since the Emperor's reply to the announce- e ment of the capture or the Bogue forts. The l imperial chop beathed nothing but vengeance f and defiance to the .English. This induced f the Commodore to start immediately for Cal- ^ cutta. He at the same time ordered her Majesty's troop ship Jupher to proceed to Can- j 8 nanore for the 94th regiment. A report was r' prevalent among the Chinese that the Em- J peror's nephew had arrived ii Canton, and ordered all the chops about the opening of the trade to be cancelled. ssw flnn i?r vav /> * a a f j 1 na uivu.i i rv/A An important verdict was given in favor c of the heirs of Spann vs. the Executors ^ of John Fox, on Monday last. IU^I ?*:ii ? who have just returned from making the tour of the Western counties of Virginia r, and of Frederick and Washington coun- n ties in this State, represent the present e prospects for a full yield of Wheat as very n cheering. The recent rains, from which damage to the growing crop was anticipa- a ted, have had a very heneficial elfect gen- o erally in bringing up the under heads and " in increasing their sixe and fullness. If the present favourable state of the weather continues for a week or ten days, the ,| crop will not only be a full average one in C] quantity hut the quality will be supeior. a In some places the straw does not stand as thick on the ground as in some former seasons, but the size of the heads will fully make up for any deficiency from this j! cause. In the Middletown and Pleasant Vallies in this State and in the Winches- r. ter Valley in Virginia particularly, the S prospects are ver}' good. We are also K informed that a much larger quantity of c. wheat was sown la-<t Fall than usual, the T} farmers having to a considerable extent r substituted it for rye. ' The production of a the latter article will consequently he reduced, but this deficiency wi!l be more ti than made up bv the increased quantity of! From the S. C. Temperance Advocate. Mr. Editor ?There is a spring of cool, lear water, situated abcut a mile and a hall nm the Town of Darlington. It is not amed Saratoga, or Bath, or Epsom, but is * n mi ailed by our citizens, par excellence, " 1 ne pring." This if a place of great resort. Ivery afternoon in summer, when the delining sun loses his ardour, you may see carapes of all descriptions bearing a precious eight of human beings, together with couples f young ladies and gentlemen,on horseback, 11 bonding their courses thitherward. If you ever come to Darlington, Mr. Edi>r, I advice you by all means to visit "The pring." The ride is a pleasant one; to gel iere, you take a nothernly direction from the iwn, pass Swift Creek, and go through a lit. e village, which has arisen within late years, nd bears the very Euphonious name of Dona. ;il. you then take to the right, and after going alf a mile through the pine woods, the grat. ied eye wi'l observe in ihe distance a grove f venerable oak trees, whose umbrageous iliage half conceals a small white edifice, is'efully built and decorated. This is the unple which has beer, erected ovpr the iring, by the munificence of the ladies ol larlingron. It is supported by columns and uclosed by bannisters, the floor is of brick lar the feet may be kept drv, and convenient >ats are placed around, which are graced ev? ry afternoon, by "Fairer nvmphs than ever blest Arcadian stream." The soring is indeed a fine one, the watei hich is impregnated with minerals and condered by our citzens as a cure for every isurder, 'S remarkably cool and refreshingmore bounteous far than all the frantic juice rhirh Uacchus pours."
