Mr. Evans, v ho is a member of the 1
Committee of Ways and Moans, rose in
reply to Mr Jones, intending, no doubt,
Jo give the views of the minority of the
Committee on the subject. Several other
members at the same time, attempted
to get the floor. Mr. Adams, who was
Chairman of the Committee, gave the
floor to Mr. Barnard, of New York, who
had first caught his eye.
Mr. Barnard reminded the House that
he had on unfinished speech on this subject
still on hand?and he wont on to finish
it. His object was to show that the present
Administration endeavour to throw vast
pecuniary responsibilities on the nc.^t four
years, and, at the same time, are making
no arrangements to meet the demands on
the Treasury, after the 1th of March next.
He went very fully into this subject Benting
it in detnjl. Ho summed many millions
of expenses which were not provided

a specimen of Tomato Jelly, prepared in

The l)f. thinks the medical properties
of the tomato is such as strongly to recommend
their culture. In all the pulmonary
diseases they are excel!cnt-gooJ
tor a cough and soothing to the lungs.
The process of making them into jelly
is simple and easy. When tho tomatoes
are ripe stew them thoroughly in a brass
ketllo. Their own juice is sufficient tor
tiiis purpose. When well stewed, strain
them through a course cloth, add an equal
port of sugar, and then boil gently for a
few hours, when it will bo fit for the jars,
to keep and use as is found convenient or
necessary.
