In this respect man is in-1 finitely behind the brute creation, who' never sicken, unless when caused by! man. Yet man's organization is is vastly the most perfect and least liable to disease. But ma ikind are nearly all I suicides?-downright self-murderers of sou' | and body. The y seem to be determined * * neither to live long nor to enjoy life whilst they do live. A perfectly healthy man knows neither fatigue nor pain yet men love both,- and court and woo them, making them their constant attendeuts from the cradle to the grave. But is right enough to allow them to chose their companions. Let them have them but do not blame the world in which you live for the result of this choice. The influence of a light, trashy literature on the mind, and couseouentlv udou t ? I w I the human system is little thought of at the present day. When physology is ( taught and studied as it should he these influences which are brought to bare upon j the whole man with tremendous power will be rightly appreciated and not till then. Few are aware of the physological evils or rather pathological?for the system is made | to depart widely from health?that have their origin in a morbod excitability pre. duced by the reading of fiction and then transmitted to oflspring. This subject must claim the attention of the Christian philanthropist. Those who think must think on the subject and then give the world their thoughts. We want them. It is true light is beginning to dawn upon our world. But there is as yet only enough to "make the darkness visible." We have just began to feel that we want light that a darkness that is palpable is all around. The iuflueuce of this species of literature on the mind and through the mind on the body must be studied. We only call up the subject now but we hope some friend of truth will hereafter do it justice thrnnnrh fK?? pnlnnttic r\f tVm Jmirnnl. If not we shall think our own thoughts and give them to our readers. That distinguished philanthopist Horace Mann, has spoken well on this subject.? Wc could wish he would again speak on a theme so much neglected. The energies of his mighty miud would be well employed in fathoming the depths of the evils produced by a species of literature if i literature it can be called, for which we | have no appropriate name. We give be- j low an extract from his pen. We wish our readers to think on the subject. We intend to present them some startling facts ere long:? "So far as it respects fictitious writings the explanation of their weekness and dispersive influence is palpable to the feeblest comprehension. All men must recognise the wide distinction between intellect and feeling, between ideas and emotions.* * * * How it is feeling and not the intellect.? excitable or spontatniouslv active powers of the mind and not its steady day-laboring faculies,?which the great body of fictitious works appeals to and exercises.? Were the whole mass of these works analyzed reduced to its componet elements nineteen parts in every twenty would he found addressed to the emotions and feelings and not to the reason and judgement. Their main staple and texture arc a discription of love, jealousy, hope, fear, removes, revenge, rapture, dispnir?the whole constituting a dark ground of guilt and misery, occasionally illumined by a crossing beam of cxtatic joy, or almost superhuman virtue. I5ut the trials and temtations described, are rarely such as any human being will fall into, and the virtues celebrated are such, as few will ever have an opportunity to achieve. Hence, sympathy and aversion, desire and apprehension, arc kept at the highest tension ; but it is upon incidents and scenes, outside of actual life?not in this world, and often not capable of being transferred to it. Those faculties have nothing to do, by which we comprehend our position in life, and our relations to society,?by which we discover what our duty is, and the wisest way tc perform it. The mind surrenders itself to the interest and excitement of the story, while the powers by which we discern tendencies and balance probabilities, are discarded; ?nay those sober thoughts are unwelcome intruders, which come to break the delusion, and to repress an insane exhileration of the feelings,?until at last, the diseased and infatuated mind echoes that pagan saying, so treasonable to truth, that it would prefer to go wrong with one guide, rathej than right with another,?as though j in a universe which an all-wise Being has formed, any thing could be as well as to go right. In the reports of some of the French hospitals for lunatics, the reading of romances is set dow-i as one of the standing causes of insanity.*'?Third Annual Report, I ? hctwo?bw?ee"xi_i_BLL_'_iL a1 ? m tvrra A Letter of Recommendation.?When Doctor Franklin was Minister of the United States in Fiance, he was often importuned by persons unknown to him, to give them letters of recommendation. For cases j of this kind, and when it was impossible to refuse, he prepared the following model, | and in some instances actually employed i it to shame persons making such indiscreet applications, and in some measure to stop them.?yatiotial Gazette. The prisoner was fully convicted of the offence, but at the urgent intercession of the reverened gentle mau whom he had injured, was liberated on singing the fetotal pledge for a month. At the expiration of the month be called at the house of the divine, and , being introduced, expressed his gratitude for the effects of the pledge he had submitted to, and concluded wifh expressing the utmost sorrow at not having met and knocked down his rcvereuce thirty vears f before.
