IIkalth. In consequece of different degrees of health, the talents of the same ] individual often varies several hundred per | cent. Upon its import&ce, and the means j of preserving and obtaining it, and of re- ( gaining it impaired, I cannot enlarge here. < Observe the influence of disease upon the manifestations of the mind?the irritibility and sour temper and debilitated intellect and moral feeling which often accompany it.?Observe bow total changed is the ^ dyspeptic from what he was before, and your impressions as to the influence and importance of health, will be quite as distinct airily any thing that can be said;' huce. Rut alas I how few retain their j health thirty years. The midnight dark- , iiess and total ignorncc of the laws of life and health which pervade the community is both astonishing and heart- | sickning. In this respect man is in- ^ finitely behind the brute creation, who I ? never sicken, unless when coused by' man. Yet man's organization is i .is vastly the most perfect and least liable to disease. But mankind are nearly all . suicides?-downright self-murderers of soul andhodv. Th? y seein to be determined!, neither to live long nor to enjoy life whilst . they do live. A perfectly healthy man . knows neither fatigue nor pain yet men love both, and court and woo them, ma king them their constant attendents from the entile to the grave. But is right enough to allow them to chose their companions. Let them have them but do not blame the world in which you live for the result of this choice. If you wish either to enjoy life or to exercise your minds, you must keep your health.?Poiclcr's Practical Phrenology. From tlic Health Journal. INFLUENCE OF LIGHT READING. The influence of a light-, trashy literature on the mind, and consequently upon the human system is little thought of at the present day. When phvsology is taught and studied as it should he these influences which are brought to bare upon the whole man with tremendous power will be rightly appreciated and not till then. ^ Few are aware of the physological evils or rather pathological?for the system is made to depart widely from health?that have their origin in a morhod excitability produced by the reading of fiction and then transmitted to offspring. This subject must claim the attention of the Christian philanthropist. Those who think must think on the subject and then give the world their thoughts. We want them. It is true light is beginning to dawn upon gur world. But there is as yet only enOtigh to "make the darkness visible." We have just began to feel that we want light that a darkness that is palpable is all around. The influence of this species of literature on the mind and through the mind on the Itody must l?e studied. We only call up the subject now hut we hope some friend of truth will hereafter do it justice through the columns of the Journal. If not we shall think our own thoughts and give them to our readers. That distinguished philanthopist Horace Mann, has spoken well on this subject.? Wc could wish he would again speak on a theme so much neglected. The energies of his mighty mind would be well employed in fathoming the depths of the evils produced by a species of literature if literature it can he called, for which we hnvA Tin nnnrAnriotn W- ? 1 1 ?w. w invu imiiir. if r JilVU !)(! low an extract from hi* pen. J "So far as it respects fictitious writings ? the explanation of their wcekness anddis- 1 pereive influence is palpable to the feeblest ^ comprehension. All men must recognise the wide distinction between intellect and feeling, between idens and emotions.* * * * How it is feeling and not the intellect,? excitable or spontatniously active powers of the mind and not its steady da v-lnbori 110 faculies,?which the great hodv of fieti- \ tious works appals to nod exercises.? Were the whole mass of these works analyzed reduced to its componet elements nineteen parts in every twenty would ( be found addressed to the emotions and < feelings and not to the reason and judgement. Their main staple and texture are a discription of love, jealousy, hope, fear, removes, revenge, rapture, dispair?the whole constituting a dark ground of guilt and misery, occasionally illumined by a crossing beam of cxtatic joy, or almost sii- ' pcrhuman virtue. Hut the trials nnd tern- | tations descrilied, nre rarely such as any , human being will fall into, and the virtues i celebrated are such, as few will ever have 1 an opportunity to achieve. Hence, sympathy and aversion, desire nnd apprehension, arc kept nt the highest tension ; but it is upon incidents and scenes, outside of ac- I tual life?not in this w?rl<t- nurl n,.i capable of being transferred to it. In the mean, tiine, the understanding sleeps ; the ] intellect is laid aside. Those faculties have nolhing to do, bv which we comprc- I liend our position in life, and our relations j to society,?!?y which wc discover what our duty is, and the wisest way to perform ( it. The mind surrenders itself to the interest and excitement of the story, while the powers by which we discern tendencies and balance probabilities, are discarded ; ?nay those sober thoughts arc unwelcome intruders, which coine to break the delus. ion, and to repress an insane exhileration I of the feelings,?until at last, the diseased ?' and infatuated rnind echo's that pagan ( saying, so treasonable to truth, that it would prefer to go wrong with ono guide, |{ rathei than right with another,-?as though ? in a universe which an all-wise Being has 0 formed, any thing could be as well as to go right.
