FEEDING MILCH COWS.
Mr Tucker under this head says "natural
grass is the first and best of aii food for
rows: and where this can be obtained in
sufficient (quantities nothing further cnu be
beared. Sweet and nutritious grass gives
a richness and flivor to milk, retainable
from no other source; and which milk produced
from grusrf, distillers was!), or roots
ran never equal. Of lho grasses says Mr.
Tucker, lucorn is the best, but as this is no
;t cultivated grass, ihf' next best is cl"ver.
Perhaps we have nothing in this country
which excels the clover for imparting richness
and even fragruncc to our milk. The
grasses ar^lvs* for fading when green, hut
the season of the year has arrived when
green grass is no longer to be obtained, it is
therefore necessary if we feed Willi grass at
all In feed it os hay.
Curtcrn* from three acres of grass, cut
and fed thirty milch cows with 231 bs. cue

was excellent, and their rndk superior, and

^ by grazing would have required 73 acr<'s.
If such is the saving it would evidently be
fMitter for iw to pp-pare grass for ?Itis par.
ticnhr purpos . and though a hand may
be required to cut and carry the grass, it
will be found a saving of time and labor.
With us itj T'-rtn ssee, the Orchard grass
wdl, perhaps, be found the best ; u..d iu addit
on to this, we ran have blue grass, upon
which they may continually graze,?bul
when the winter arrive? what is to be done 1
if you have saved yonr clover hay you will
Hud it the best food. The slops from your
eook houses ant very good, and when the
cow becomes accustomed to it, will drink ii
kindly n* a pig. We now come to the sub
ject which we had mainly fn view in pen
uing this article, viz: the caution necessarily
w in changing diet.
The*ech ing"s in most crises act preju
dcialiy, such, for instance, as a sudden
change from grass to grain without a preparation.
The aiimenjary canal being hardly
yet in a sraie of digesting capacity, suf
fcis from the increased powers necessary
to draw nutriment from substances less digestible
than those before in use, thence fob
lows costiveness, hear, and thirst, as well as
an unhealthy state of thecoa1, which soon
leek harsh and dry. The snmo rule will
b
^ follow from n generous diet to a poor one ;
f?"changing, great care should be tuken as
to salting, wat? ring, and qunnfit)'. V?ry
little grain should bo given at first,?mix it
with hoy or shucks, sprinkle with salt water
mixed with some bran, by this moans con.
stipvtion and repletion may be avoided.?
IJran washings should be used until the
bowels appear to be relaxed. A house is
desirable when you are making these changes,
and much care should bo taken ns to
the exercise, the regu ar time of feeding,
watering, &c. &c.
A word on sailing and wc are done. All
are satisfied, we presume, or the good effects
of suit on the system, vegetables and
meats ore unpalatable without salt. The
oncien's held salt in high estimation. The
will animals of the forest sc k with avidity
the licks, and often encounter danger in
getting to them ; nil this cannot uris from
mere accident or caprice, but a powerful
instinct beyond control, which compels them
to seek it. Those who have observed it
have found it as necessary to horses, esittl?*
end sheep, and they should l?e supplied ut
regular slated intervals all seasons of the
year. It promotes their henllh and im

worms of the stomach.

Every breed of animals which has,
through a few generations, been over fed,
requires similar feeding, and the offsprim;
of such animals require, and can digest moic
food than others. The qualities chiefly to
bo sought for in catdo are a tendency to
fatten on httlo fool, and to give an abut),
dance of rich milk. The tendency to f men
is indicated chiefly by the capuci y of tiie
chest.
Cows which give much milk have the
power of eating and digesting much food.
The breeds of cows which ?>ive lessmdk
and manifest greatest disposition to become
fat will fatten on less food.

PROSPECTUS
OF TUB
AND
CHSBAW A xiV i.RTISER*
The Editor of the Cheraw Gazette has determined,
at the suggestion of the Pee Dee
Ag'icuitural Society, to devote more space
than formerly to Agriculture, and matters pertaining
special y to it? interests. About nine
columns, or a page and a half weekly, will be
occupied with this subject, excep' when it
snail be necessary to make roocn for Executive
Messages, and a few other political paper's
such as every intelligent citizen ought to read.
A large proportion of what shall appear under
the Agricultural head must, of course, be selected.
Hut the numerous Agricultural periodicals
now published in tins country afford
abundant and excellent materials for selection;
and, after a short tnie, the reports, and other
papers of tell Pee Dee Agricultural Society
will of themselves, form no inconsiderable
body of original matter, a.1 of it adapted particular
to this part of the country. And it
is hoped, also, that among the numerous in
telhgent and ? nterpr smg plante s cl the surrounding
districts ana counties some may be
found who.will, occasionally, take the trouble
ot contributing to the columns of the paper the
result of their experience.
Among the su>jects which will engage the
Editor's attention the culture of silk shall not
be overlooked. Ample ins ruciions will be
given, in their proper season, for cultivating
the moms mulicaulis and making silk
The p-<per w ill espouse the cause of no party
in politics, but shall contain an impartial sum
mary of political intelligence, and, ccasionally,
able speeches and well written essays (w hen
met with) fairly discuss ng the principles and
measures of all parties. It :s believed that e
comparatively small space devoted to political
subjects in thin way may he made more profitable
to the Farmer of domestic habits, who wishes
to he acquainted with the true state of the
country and qualified for a proper and intelligent
discharge of?lie duties of citizens hip, thai,
a whole sheet tilled, from week to week, and
year to year, wi h one-sided discusrions, and
he mere qtiarn Is of editors and politicians,?
whilst, at the same time, it w ill not he calcuated
to estrange neighbor from neigh nor, or
to mislead into a belief that one half of the
country are less patriotic than the o her, or
less ardently attached to our republican instit
unions.
So much of the fourth page as shall not be
occupied with standing advertisements will
generally he filled up with matter of moral and
religious cast, and articles conducive, in other
respeets, to proper family iustrucuon and family
discipline.

issuing this Prospectus shall he sufficient to
