The newspaper* bave been lately teemiag '
with ingeniously worded advertisements ie- 1
garding the awa-di. These publication* hare 1
been skillfully prepared, ao a* to ODvey tie |
impression that thin'or that exhibitor has rod- <
ly reoeived the highest and best award. This,
Instead of informing the publio as to the tr?o 1
state of affairs, they base simply oonfased tfco i
reader. Vi itors at the Centennial find tbets
selves bewildered by the adverse claims to
distinction which they find placarded on eve
hand, and they do not know which way to turn
to disoover the truth. In no department has
this system of misrepresentation been oarriol
to bo great an extent as that devoted to pianafortes.
There has been "a war" between
piano exhibitors since the Exhibition opened,
and a regular skirmish line of placards sinrn
the awards were officially announced. They
have vied with each other in the use of extravagant
language to prove their respective
claims to distinction. The most ingenious
methods have been devised; disinterested
correspondents, whose sole object was to iastruct
the ignorant publio, have volunteer^
their eervioes (for a consideration); ex-judges
of awards, in the interest of oartain piano
manufacturers, have made pretended revelations
of tho socrotH of the jury-room, for the
sake of supporting the olaims of their partictlar
favorites, and lightning calculators have
been appealed to and have fouud conveniett
mathematical rules by which to ostabiidi

tho preteuso or tho no much abused max in
that figures caunot lie. All these effort*,
while ridiculous to those acquainted with C1jb
subject, have been attempted to influence ths
uDiuitiated. In faot, the piano men have left
nothing uudone to mislead the public, aud by
their efforts havo caused everything relating
to pianos to be lookod upon with distrust, and
have mado themselves the laughing stock of
tho pubiio. B\ these means injustice is net
only done to the pubiio, but to those who art
not ODly entitled to tho loading position, but
who wero awarded it by the judges. Your
correspondent has taken the trouble to submit
all the various reports, which are the bat-is ot
the awardB, to a careful scrutiny and comparison,
aud the result is that tho pianos of Wm.
Knabe & Co. are found to head the list
This house, from the commencement of the
Exhibition, relied solely upon the merits of
their instruments to secure them a Just award;
and since the official announcement, although
they were decreed the highest honors in the
Piauo department, they have modestly remained
in tho background. It is fortunate
that the judgea, in preparing t^e Knabe report
eo. framed it as to leave no doobt about
their pre ominenco. They especially commended
all their four styles of pianos ("concert
grand, parlor grand, square and upright*),
and accorded them tho praise of uneqnaled
excellence in all the details of perfect intt.u
moots. The report is plain, straightforward
and comprehensive, speoifyinK all the o!e
meiits of merit whioh it is possible fcr tbe
best pianoforte to possess?power, rictuses
*ud singing quality of tone ; ease and elasticity
of touoh ; effectiveness of action ; solidity nnd
originality of construction, and cxoellenai of ]
workmanship. By comparing it with the o\her
reports in-tbo name department, even the
most skeptical will acknowledge that no ,
stronger language oould have beeu used to express
tlie unanimous approval of tbe Judge*.
