Mr. Dnncan, of Nitshill, Scotland, is
?or rather was?a poor and hnmble
miner, but his name will Kve with those
of the discoverers of vaccination tnd
an no-.thesis. Various causes, among
which was a tendency on the part of
Mr. Duncan's fellow townsmen to speak
Slightingly of his moral and roiuing
character, led him to resolve to quit nn
unappreciativo and heartless world. In
Buoh circumstances, an ordinary Scotchman
would probably have bought o
copy of some humorous work, and killed
himself with a few pages of jokes ; or he
would have set free his personal spiril
with the pistol, the rope, or the vial of
poison. Bnt Mr. Dnncan was not an
ordinary man. He was anxious to die,

tloman ought to have his corpse littering
up the street, or encumbering his
neighbor's fishpond, and that it would
be little less than robbery were he tc
compel other people to undertake the
trouble and expense of burying him.
He therefore sought some way by which
be could commit suicide, and at the
tame time effectually dispose of bif
body, and the result of this search was
the invention which is sure to mako him
Famous.
One day the small boys of Ni? skill
perceived Mr. Duncan in the act o!
issuing from his house, with a tin cat
and a length of fuse under his arm. Oi
reaching the middle of the street h?
placed the can on the ground, lightet
the end of the'fuse, and inserting th<
o^her end in the can, leaned over it in i
thoughtful though unnsual attitude
Confident that here was a rare oppor
tunity for safely upsetting the unpopu
lar miner, the boys stealthily approach* <
him. Suddenly he caught sight o
them, and yelled to them to fly for thei
lives. They did so, but almost immedi
ately the can exploded with a tre
mendons report. When the smok
cleared away, Mr. Duncan and the tii
can had vanished. A few pounds o
dynamite had blown that ingenious mai
into such small* fragments that uo coro

sufficiently large to warrant an iuques
or to require a funeral. ? New Yon

There is a popular belief, nays th
American Architect and Building
News, that ivy growing upon a buildiuj
renderc it damp and unhealthy, whicl
is quite unreasonable ; in fact, if a wall
particularly a north wall, be damp, th
best treatment is to plant English ivie
at its base ; for not only does the dens
foliage of the plant keep out rain, bu
its aerial roots absorb the moisture al
ready in the wall. The real minchit
done by ivy is to old buildings of ston
or briok, from whose joints the morta
has been dislodged. An ivy shoot one
lodged in one of these crevices wil
grow in bulk until in the oourse of year
it has so pressed the joints apart the
the masonry oan be dislodged by an
strong vibration of the building.

REMARKABLE LETTER
From a Gentleman Known and Honored
from the Atlantio to the
Faoiflo Coast.
Messrs. Wsiks & Pott*r, Wholesale Druggists. Boston,
Mass.: Oentlemcn,?I have for some months felt It
that I owed to suffering humanity to write you,
station the great benefit that I have derived from the
use or Sanford's Radical Cur* for Catarrii. For
more than 20 years I have been amicted with this very
troublesome complaint. I havo tried all tho remedies
that I could find, but without material or permanent
benefit. Last fall the disease bad arrived at that state
that 1 must have relief or die. The entire membran- !
oua system had become so toAnmcd, sod the stomach
so disordered, that it was a doubtful matter whothrr
I could go to the Pacific coast, or If I did iro whether
1 mould live to come beclc or not. Isawanadver- .
tlscmcnt of this medicine, and although being very |
Incredulous about specifics or nostrums of any kind, 1
yot In sheer desperation I tried this, and wnsatoneo
benefited by It. The changes of climate, a chronic
disease of the liver, and tny age ?overTO?may pr>-vent
my entire restoration, but the benefit I aorlva j
from Its dally use Is to me invaluable, and I am hoping
to ba completely cored, and at last arrive at a respect- |
able old age.
If this statement of my caso can be of any service to ,
those afflicted as I have been, and enable you to bring .
this remedy Into more general use, especially on the ;
Pacific coast (where It Is much needed), my object I i '
writing this note will be obtained.
Very truly yonrs, HENRTWELL8,
