n.
a. Fohi, in the course of his wanderings,
iH oorning to a village, knocked at the door
D of a rich woman and begged permission
_ to enter. " What!" said she, "do yon
' think I receive into my house every
lg roving vagabond ? No, indeed ; it '
would be unbefitting a respectablo
woman ! Go your way 1"
P8 Then he went to the cottage of a poor
J- woman, who at onoe kindly begged him
41 to enter. She set before him the only
r? food she*had, a little goat's milk, broke
a piece of bread into it, and said :
|f " May Fohi bless it, that we may both
' have enough."
1 " She then prepared for him a couch of
straw ; and, when he fell asleep, per**
oeiving that he had no Bhirt, she sat up
d> all night and made him one out of some
of linen she had made by her own hard
labor. In the morning she brought it
ie to him, begging ho would not despise
u- her poor gift. After breakfast she nce
oompanied him a little way, and at partDf
ing Fohi said : " May the first work you
ie undertake last until evening I"
.h When she got home she begun to
tt measure her linen, to see how much was
a. left, and she went on measuring, and
c did not come to the end of it until
)d the evening, when her house and yard
were full of linen ; in short, she did not
?e know what to do with her wealth. Her
rich neighbor, seeing this, was sorely
541 vexed, and resolved that such good
-"d fortune should not escape her again.
*8 After some months the traveler came
ui once more to the village ; she went to
meet liim, pressed him to go to her
is house, treated him with the best food
o- she had, and in the morning brought
.. him a shirt of fine linen, whioh she had
L, had made some time before ; but all
d, night she kept a candle burning in her
,t. room, that the stranger, if he awoke,
e. might suppose she was making his shirt.
After breakfast she aocompauied him
out of the village, and when they parted
he said : " May the first work you undertake
last till evening 1"
She went her way home, thinking the
is whole time of her linen, and anticipate
ting its wonderful increase ; but just
p< then her oows begun to low. " Before
* I measure my linen," said she "I will
ad quickly feteh the oows some water."
Bi But when she poured the water into
l(j the trough, her pail never emptied ;
ln she went on pouring, tho stream increased,
and soon her house and yard
were all under water; the neighbors
c_ oomplained that everything was ruined ;
c~ the cattle were drowned, and with diffl
*' oulty she saved her own life, for the

In the forty years that the Merchant's
Gargling Oil has been before the pnblio,
thousands of patent med;oiens have
been ushered into the market and retired,
while this old remedy has held on
its way, increasing in popul rity with
each succeeding year. Merchant's Oarerling
Oil is known familiarly the whole
length and breadth of the land, and the
name of the secretary, Mr. John Hodge,
of Liockport, has a fame as wide as the
medicine he dispenses. We have no
data as to the number of bottles sent out
from the manufactory last year, but the
quantity must have been enormous.
Tho company distribute two millions of
almanacs and domestic recipe books annually,
and when it is remembered that
these are given away, some idea of the
extent of the advertising enterprise may
be formed. A medicine that will stand
the test of forty years, as the Merchant's
Gargling Oil has done, needs no special
indorsement at this late day.?Buffalo

Htde Park, Vt., Feb. 7, 1876.
Messrs. Beth W. Fowlo <t Sons, Boston :
Oenfs?Yon may perhaps remember that I
wrote you several weeks ago in regard to the
nee of the Peruvian 8ymp for my wife, who
was suffering from general debility, the sequence
of typhoid dysentery. I bad tried the
most noted physicians in this State, and also
in Canada, without relief. At yonr recommendation
she oomtnonced the nee of the Syrnp ;
the first four bottles made but little impression.
but while taking the fifth she began to
improve rapidly, and now, after using six of the
dollar bottles, she bad regained her strength,
and iB able to do most of the work about the
houso; and [ feel that I cannot speak too highly
in praise of the Peruvian 8yrnp. I have
prescribed it to several of my patients, and
have procured the sale of several dozen of it
here. You can make auy nse of this letter
yon seo fit. Yours, very truly,
