Nail in the Foot.?To relieve from ,
the terrible effects of running a nail in
the foot of man or beast, take peach
loaves, if a season when they may be obtained,
braise them And apply to the
wound, confining with a bandage; renew c
the application if neoeasary, bnt onoe is 0
generally sufficient. v
Stings op Tnseots.?For the stings of f
a hornet, bee, or wasp, bathe the part *
in extremely cold water, or bathe with
spirits of hart-shorn. In case of swallow- t;
ing a bee or wasp, take a teaspoon ful of c
common salt, dissolved in water; it *'
kills the insect, and cures the sting.
Trkatment of Burns.?Plunging the ^
part immediatelv in cold water r?u??u*-n
the pain in a second. If tho part can- v
not bo kept nnder water, cover it with
dry flonr an inch deep or inoro. In mast '
cases nothing more is needed. In so- 1
vere cases, while the injured part is un- 0
der water, simmer a leek or two in an 11
earthen vessel, with half its bnlk of
hog*8 lard, until the leeks are soft.
Whon cool, spread it thickly on a piece
of linen cloth, and apply to the injured
part. Renew if necessary.
Sprains op the Wrist and Ankle.?
As soon as possible after the accident,
get a mnslin baudage, one cr two yards
long, and two or three inches wide; wet
it in oold water, and roll it smoothly and
firmly aronud the injured part; keep tho
limb at rest, exposed to the air and constantly
damp with cold water. The
6ooner after the accident the bandage is
applied, tho less pain and swelling there
will be.
Blebdino at the Nose.?The two
small arteries branching up from the
main arteries, on each side of the neck,
and passing over the jawbones, supply
tho face with blood. If the nose bleeds .
irom the right side, for instance, pass
the finger along the edge of the right
jaw till the beating of the artery is felt;
press hard upon it, and the bleeding
will oease. Continue the pressnro five
minutes, until the ruptured vessels in
the nose contract. In the case of severing
of an artery, tho utmost activity is
required, else the patient will bleed to
death. Tie a handkerchief loosely
around the limb, between the wound
and the heart, place a stick through it,
and twist it up tightly, till the bleeding
stops. If tho wound will not admit of
this, place the thumb upon the artery,
between tho wound and tho heart, and
send immediately for a physician.

pi t of boiling water; add more meal if
not thick enough; boil an hour, stirri g ]
frequeutly to prevent lumpinehs; serve ,

Palat the HaUdlnga.
Before the boards begin to show their
natural color is the time to paint, for '
two reasons: It is more economical in
the saving of the building, and n i he 1
use of paint. As long as it takes 1< ss
paint in the aggregate to keep a build- 1
ing looking real well it is infinitely bet '
ter to do so. It gives an air of neatness <
to the premises, and speaks as no other i
advertisement can of the thrift of the 1
possessor. i
In the fall is a good time to do the ,
painting. The flies are less trouble- ,
some and there is generally mere time .
for the work. If it is put off until spring
there are ten chances to one, on thefarin, ,
that it will not be done in a year. It (
will pay to do it now.

The Panama Hat Plant.
The Bolivians give this plant the
name of Jipagapa, a town in the republic
of Ecuador, which is the principal
seat of the hat manufacture? 'Panama,"
like Mocha " in the case of coffee, and
" Brussels " in that of carpets, being a
misnomer. Befoie the leaf lias beguu
to open?when, in fact, it resembles a
closed fan?it is cut off close to the
petiole, the baso of which forms the
center of the orown of the hat. It is
then divided longitudinally into strips
with the thumb nail, the thick part form
ing the mid-rib being rejected. The
number of shreds into which it is di- I
vided of course depends ou the fineness
of the hat into which they are to be
manufactured. This Bplit leaf, which is
of a greenish white color, is next dipped
into boiling water, theu into tepid water
acidulated with lemon juice, and lastly
it is allowed to soak in cold water for
some tiui< , and aftinward dried in the
suu. Each hat is, or ought to be, made
of a singlo leaf. They vary in jirice, according
to fineness, from thirteen pence
to as many pounds. The damping and
dryiug operations cause the shreds to
assume a curled or cylindrical form.
which much increases the strength without
injuring their pliancy. Before plaiting,
the coarser qualities are 'lamped
with water, but the tiner sorts are left
out in the morning dew, and worked on
bofore sunrise. A hat of the finest
quality, made out of a single leaf, will
take several months to moke it oompleto,
and the plaiting will bo so fine as hardly
to bo perceptiblo at a short distance.
Tbe plant is y no means difficult to
cultivate, and is one of the most hardy
species of the genus. It grows well ia
tbe damp heat of an orohid house where
the temperature does not fall below
sixty degrees.
