in the trials at that place of the men
engaged in the Ellenton afTair. lie is employed
by Mr. Corbin for the purpose.
There will be a IInyc-> and Wheeler
and Smalls meeting in Beaufort on Sat
unlay next, flits is one <?f the meetings
appointed by the state executive committee,
but there is no mention of an
invitation for a joint discussion.
Mr. J. G. Thompson has returned to
^ his post as editor of the Union Ilcruld and
his caustic pen will cont'iiuc to carry
. dismay wlurever thct widely civculated
journal is gratuitously distributed.
We regret to announce the sickness of
James W. Moore Esq., Dcinocratic'county
chairman. Until further notice all
commnur.ications should be addressed to
him at llcaufort, care of Win. Elliott
Esq.
Mr Moore is improving and will be out
in a day or two.
Next Wednesday is the day set tor Gen
Wade Hampton to speak at Early Branch.
We hear that arrangements will be made
><> liurj mo peopie iroin tne islands at
reduced prices, and possibly free of
charge. A largo crowd will be present
any how, to lriar what next Governor
lias to say, and sec the big meeting.
The new JJlm*mx Engine company
fc were out mi parade la?t Mo.eley, and in
their 11 "W uniforms looked very "well.
This company, although only a year old,
lias 39 members. At the annual election
Alex. Brown was chosen foreman, Hiciinrd
Taylor assistant and \V. C. Morrison
secretary.
The Pilot IJov on her trip from Charleston
last week ran aground 011 Morgan
id and ban'', 011 Friday morning, and
remained hard and fast until Monday
last when she discharged her freight on
another vessel and succeeded in getting |
off It was feared at one time that she
would go to pieces owing to the "heavy
breakers that forced her hij 'icr on the
bank, but her captain refused all aid and
fortunately escaped.
Tin rc is a nam who is now sadly needed
by the U. S. Commissioner in Aiken.
He was called in 1371, during the Kuklux
trials in the U. S. Court in Char.
lcston, the "patent witness" and was
always ready to swear anyihiug through.
If lie was only in Aiken now it would
not be necc-siry to give $1.5 3 each for
affidavits as he would be glad to swear
to anything for $3 a day. This fellow
was auditor of Union county unJer
Scott. Thompson knows his name. Ask
him.
The Republicans in Hiib county are not
making much of a stir as yet, hut promise
to go to work soon. Lt. Gov. Gleaves
has been confined to bis bed for some
time past suffering from an attack of
country fever and Senator Green will not
likely recover from his painful iujury
before the election. Congressmen Smalls
is on the war patli and spoke in Edge
tield last Saturday. lie was accompancd
l?y J. G. Thompson and six deputy
U. S. marshals and the whole county
would have been arrested if any disturbance
had occurred.

Union-Ilerald savs that five cases
of lilies were shipped in one day last
week to Jtivers & Hoover, at Hoover's
station, on the Port Itoyal railroad
They were distributed to the white Democratic
clubs ot the neighborhood. At
tlie same time two hundred and fifty
stands of rifles were received by George
Kirkland. at Allendale.
More Burglaries.?After a rest of
two weeks our industrious burglars have
made another raid, this time extending
their visits to several stores. Sunday
morning our vigilant police at an early
hour found the front door of Mr. J. Apple's
dry goods store open and, after
making noise enough to awaken all the
neighbors, the clerks who where sleeping
overhead came down and found that the
i.~.i i *
wic nuu uucn entered and robbed, but
to what extent they did not seem able to
tell. In the morning it wus found that
the store of Mr. Krcssel had also been
entered from the rear and ransacked, the
theives securing one gold and three
silver watches, half dozen bottles of whis
key, money and other articles. From
here they seem to have visited the drug
store but the noise made in trying to
force the front door awoke Mr. Sams and
the burglars left without gaining an
entrance, but they were more successful
at Dr. Jenkins where they succeeded in
forcing the fiont doors and carried
off a supply of wiiiskey and cigar*. All
this time no policeman .van disturbed,
which alio .vs a consideration on the part of J
t he raiders hardly to have been expected, i

tliem and their places were filled by <>th
crs. It has been a conundrum, often
propounded by our citizens, how our
police cou'd be on the street all day long
and thin be up all night, and this last
raid seems to Lave been a satisfactory
solution.
The Democratic co~" itlon held at
Yemassec last week unanimously passed
the following preamble and resolutions,
for which wo are greatly obliged, and
trust that wo may merit the support not
only promised, but already so liberally
given. It has been our aim to give an
impartial view of all political subjects,
but any one that has ever tried to sit on
the fence for two years will agree with us
that it is a hard scat.
"Whereas, it is desirable and expedient
that the Democratic party in this county
have a medium favorable to the efforts
and objects of the party:
Jf'Koire'f, l hut in contradistinction to
the Standard and Commercial, Robert
Small's organ, we recognize the Beaufort
Tribune as a fair and impartial journal.
Resolved, That this convention endorse
the course of the Tribune, and recommend
it to the patronage and snimnrt. nf i
this convention and of the citizens' of the
county.
