The Democrats and Republicans united
# in a joint discussion of the p lliticnl situation
in Beaufort last Friday evening.
Messrs J. W. Moore ami Win. Elliott
Esq'rs. spoke on behalf of the Democracy
and Robert Smalls, N. B. Myers, W. J.

The Republican Ticket*
, ^ The Republican convention called to
nominate a county ticket met at the Arsenal
on Thursday Inst, and called to order
by 8. J. Bampfield ;Esq. N. B. Myers
was elected chairman and J. W. Wigg
secretary. The committee on credentials
was appointed and while they were at
work Robert Emails addressed the con
vention. In the evening the convention
got to work and nominated Sammy
Grcfcu by ^acclamation for senator, and
the following were nominated for repres
1 entatives: Tlios. Hamilton, Joe liobin'
1 son, H. Gantt, George A. Reed, N. B.
t , Myers and T. E. Miller.
For clerk of court, S. J. Bamptleld.
For Sheiiff, William Wilson.
School Commissioner, T. H. Wheeler.
Probate Judge, A. B. Addison
Coroner, A. W. Muckenfuss.
For county commissioners: V. S.Scott
I R. F. Greaves and R. J. Martin.
The ticket presented to the people is
severely criticized by all, even by the
? men who made it, and the true friends
of the Republican party regret to see that
although of all years this one should
have been the one in which the party
should have appealed to the people for
support by presenting an exceptionally
good ticket, it is a fact that the ticket is
an exceptionally weak and bad one. It
is rumored that two of the nominees have
declined to accept the nominations tendered
them, hut the majority are men
whose only aim is to get office atid like
the traditional office holder they may die
but never resign.
