WEDNESDAY SEPT. 20,1876.
Wo hear that the Republican conven- {
tion to nominate county officers will meet
in Beaufort on Oct. 6th
The yellow fever has broken out in
Brunswick, Ga. We still enjoy exceptionally
good health, and with the precautions
taken by our authorities^ have no
fear of fever in Beaufort.
Robert Smalls was renominated in 1
Columbia last week as Congressman from
t this district. There were no other ennfdidatcs
bold enough to oppose him. *
^ c
Potcr Robinson, health inspector, s
baring learned that some men trom t
Savannah were on their way to Beaufort r
/ captured one of them on his arrival and t
bad him sent out of town. It is no ubc
for refugees from the yellow fever to
come here ?b their whereabouts are f
immediately discovered and their departure
enforced. *
A merchant near Beaufort writes us to
know why other merchants in his neigb- 1
borhood who have 110 licences are allowed '
to sell liquor. This gentleman, like
others who have made similarcoinplaints, j
declines to prosecute the offenders as |
tbej are bis neighbors and he does not (
wish to make enemies. (
The Pawnee will be used as a hospital
ship should the yellow fever make its 1
appearance in the navj. (
The monitors linve been ordered to
drop down to Bay Point in order to be
safer from an attack of the fever.
Chief Engineer Joseph W. King and
Naval Constructor James W. Easbv. have <
been designated to act with the Congressional
commission on navy yards. The ]
commission meets in October. I
Dr. F. E. Wilder, J. C. Richmond and
B. B. Samshave been appointed co mmission
era of election for this county.
Old Jimmy Waring had a big fight
with a guinea-shark on Saturday night. .
Jimmy was crossing the river near I). C. |
Wilson & Co's mill when his paddle wns
an zed by the shark and literally chawed '
up betore the old man could get aBhore.
The hungry monster endeavored to smash
the boat with his tail, but that useful
appendage wos too unwieldy or the old
man too spry and he fortunately got into
shallow water and escaped, preservlrtg,
however, the remants of his paddle in | <
which were several teelh extracted from j'
the si^nk's jaws.
Gen. Wado Hampton is announced to j
speak at Beaufort on October 23th. <
1
Health Coinmissinoner Janeway of
New York says that "The fact is well ;1
established that yellow fever infection
can not be communicated by contact with
those (suffering from that dis< aso, but
that the germs are carried from place to j
place by clothing, bedding, and mer-!
chandise. The destruction of these articles
insures the stamping out of the dls- J,
oa?e, and prevents any concentration of 1
infection that might result in an epidem- '
ic" _ < j

now quarantined here
Democratic County Conyentlon.
The Democratic County Contention
called to meet at Yemasaee on Friday
last was well attended. Fifteen precincts <
were represented by about fi:ty delegates, 1
three of whom were colored. The Convention
was called to order by Jas. W. '
Moore Esq., county chairman, who stated *
that they hud been called together not
to nominate a county ticket, unless the
Convention should elect to do so, bat to
perfect the organization so that they could ,
work in harmony. The Democratic i
party, he said was now a unit on their <
state ticket which had proved entirely ^
aat isfactory to the party, and the prospect
from all reports was most satisfactory
of the success of the ticket in November.
On motion of Win. Elliott a county
executive committee was elected which
was to be charged wiih the execution of
all business of the party In the county,
co.nposed of the tollowing gentlemen:
Win. Elliott, John Lawton, C. J. C. 1
llutson. Joseph Olovcr, C. J. Coleock,
W. J. Gooding, O. F. Duke and W. N.
TTeyward. On motion of Mr. Coleock a
committee of one from each delegation
was appointed toconsider what other business
should be transacted. After a short
deliberation the committee made a report
recommending that the executive
committee be authorized to raise money
by assessment on the Various clubs; that
it is the senso of the convention that Gen.
Wade Hampton should speak in Beaufort
instead of Grahamville, and if
poeeihln also at Branson; that it is the
opinion of the convention that it is
advisable to postpone the nomination of
a county ticket till a future time. After
a long debate the report was adopted.
Speeches were made by Wm. Elliott. J.
E. . Deloach, W. Tillinghast and others
showing that the Democracy of Beaufort
county arc awake, and earnest in their1
determination to make ns strongu light as |
piasiblc for their candidates. '

'I nm Miller rather pui put iii> foot in
it when he made his attack on Mr.
Chamberlain. If he had only known
bow the vote was to result Tom would
not have asserted that the Governor had
attempted sell out the party to the Dcm icrats,
and had proved a traitor to the
wen who elected him, and by his silence
confirmed the assertion that the legislature
was a band of thieves. lie said
"urthcr that Chamberlain had not
iccomplished a single reform act,
hat the tax bill .vas a fraud, and that
ic was incapable of keeping a promiae
fcc Ac.
HVc are at a losa to knew why this
nimosity on the part of Miller as be has I

ITon. Lucious J. Robinson has been
lominated by the Democrats for Governor
of New York.
Reform within the party.?R. B. Elliott
ror Attorney-general. The reform would
lave been advanced by the renomination
>f Parker for treasurer and Moses for
3overnor. They must have forgotten it.
B. J. Lee of Aiken was nominated by
die Republicans for solicitor for this
oircuit.
