The Republican county convention will
meet at the Arsenal next Monday to elect
el egates to the State convention to be
held in Columbia on the 12th prox. A
delegation favorable to the rcnomination
of Gov. Chamberlain will go from this
county. They dont want him but think
it necessary to run him as the only man
that can beat Hampton.
A very large meeting composed almost
entirely of Republicans assembled at
Brick Church St: Helena Tsland 011 Mon
day to appoint delegates to the County
Nominating Convention which meets in
Beaufort on Monday next. Smnlls,
Myers General Dennis, Wheeler, Snmmv
Green and Joe Robinson spoke in. behuif
of "the faithful;" Dr. White the only
Rebel" present was invited to speak
which he did in a short address confined
principally to the encouraging appearance
of thexrops which he thought was n
pretty fair evidence that more work nnd
less politics had engaged the attention of
the farmers for the past year and was a
fnvorable augury of great prosperity in
t he future.

members drew lots for wards and the
result was Perry, No. 1, Washington 2,
Robinson, 8, Cleaves 4, Boyce 5, and
Schepcr 6. Marshal?elect Cohen presented
his bond which was accepted, and ho
was sworn into office. A communication
was read from the fire department
announcing the election of Dr. H. M.
Stuart as chief of the dept. and W. Kressel
as assistant. Warden Gleaves gave
notice of an ordinance to amend the
ordinance establishing the fire department
which passed its first reading. The Intendant
was directed by a resolution to
enforce the market ordinance. The election
of police was postponed until
to-night.

yet. The prospects of the people there
this year are very encouraging.

Freedman's*Savings Bank may show progress
in settling up accounts. At this
rate of progress in accumulating funds
it will be four years hence before another
dividend of twenty per cent, can be paid.
The Commissioners have but one hundred
and twenty thousand dollars on
hand, while six hundred thousand do!
lars is required to pay u twenty per cent,
dividend.
Judge Shaw, in a letter to the Sumter
bar, promis s to retain possession ot
his office until removed by a competent

"Application has been made to the Presi-,

ot United Stales Cavalry, now on
duty on the Texas frontier, sent to thai
State during the election. The president
has issued the necessary instructions, und
the order for the transfer of the regiment
will soon be issued from the War Department."
