I'edges, having been indicted by the grand jury, decamped. The governor has declared the office vacant. Hams and Breakfast Bacon, just from New York, at Robehts. - The wife of William Lawrence, living near Port Royal Ferry, while walking along the shell road Sunday evening was struck by lightning and instantly killed. A very large meeting composed almost entirely of Republicans assembled at Brick Church St: Helena Tsland 011 Mon day to appoint delegates to the County Nominating Convention which meets in Beaufort on Monday next. The members drew lots for wards and the result was Perry, No. 1, Washington 2, Robinson, 8, Cleaves 4, Boyce 5, and Schepcr 6. Marshal?elect Cohen presented his bond which was accepted, and ho was sworn into office. A communication was read from the fire department announcing the election of Dr. H. M. Stuart as chief of the dept. and W. Kressel as assistant. Warden Gleaves gave notice of an ordinance to amend the ordinance establishing the fire department which passed its first reading. The Intendant was directed by a resolution to enforce the market ordinance. The election of police was postponed until to-night. Apples and Potatoes. The prospects of the people there this year are very encouraging. ~ The Commissioners in charge of the Freedman's*Savings Bank may show progress in settling up accounts. At this rate of progress in accumulating funds it will be four years hence before another dividend of twenty per cent, can be paid. The Commissioners have but one hundred and twenty thousand dollars on hand, while six hundred thousand do! lars is required to pay u twenty per cent, dividend. Judge Shaw, in a letter to the Sumter bar, promis s to retain possession ot his office until removed by a competent rgal tribunal. He will stick. Candy ! He will not appoint candidates for office, and should any of his appointees be nomiuatcd for office he will consider it sufficient ground for ther removal. The New Orleans limes of Friday say:* "Application has been made to the Presi-, i dent to have the Tenth Regiment (colored) ot United Stales Cavalry, now on duty on the Texas frontier, sent to thai State during the election. The president has issued the necessary instructions, und the order for the transfer of the regiment will soon be issued from the War Department."
