The Bounty Bill, which was to bring
relief to many of our colored citizens,
which passed the House failed to pass
the 8enate, notwithstanding the exertions
of Senator Logan, to put it through.
Congress has adjourned, and the bill
npproprintmg $30,000 for the purchase
of tho building owned by Robert Stnalls
and occupied by the Collector of Customs
has been left in the hands of the committee.
The bill for the relief of Robert
Smalls for coming out of Charleston on

the House and nlterwards introduced in
the Senate, is also resting on the table of
somo committee awaiting the next session.
The officers attached to the fleet here
have been put on shore pay, and those
recently placed on waiting orders Imve
been reduced to furlough pay.
Two " Unfortunates " were up before
the Intendant last Friday for fighting
and disturbing tlys neighborhood. An
hours detention in the lock-up with the j
mercury up to about 300 brought forth ;
the fines amounting to $22 and they were
released.
A Curiosity in the shape of a Steam
Canal boat named the Howard Drake
arrived here on Friday last. She is intended
to ply between Coosawhatchie und |
Charleston and may take Beaufort in on !
the way.
The gin house and engine house of i
Messrs. J. G. Nichols ?fc Co., on St. ;
Helena Island, were destroyed by tire last :
"Wednesday evening. In addition to the J
buildings burned were 10 cotton gins, 1 i

of corn and grist. The loss was about j
$4 ,000 on which there was no insurance. !
The fire is thought to have caught from j
a spark from the engine.

Odells' bake house on Wednesday even- j

cakes and pies und things. The next;
night Mr. Odcf's store wa- broken into
' and four boxes of candy, some pennies
and otber articles stolen. Mr. Odell is
gettiug used to burglars and as long us I
they are at all reasonable in their wants'

Saturday and Sunday were acknowledge
to be the hottest days of the year,
the mercury registering over 100 in the
aliade, and 125 in the sun. Our citizens
gave up trying to keep cool and sweltered
it out, hoping that it was the last of the
season.
A sailor on his way from Savannah to
Charleston was robbed of his money and

villc last week. The robber lias not
been arrested.
The Sea Island Hotel is being put in
first-class order by the proprietor, allowing
that his experiment in hotel keeping
bus proved a success and that he is mindful
of the wants of his guests. The walls
arc being kalsomined and washed in white 1
and other colors, and the painters are
giving the wood work a fresh coat of
paint. A large number of tourists are
expected this winter, and with the crowd
that is attached to the fleet, the question
is where are they all to he accommodated

last Friday for the murder ot Adam
Hackctt, committed over three years ago.
Coleman had been tried and convicted
