A gentleman from a neighboring city
being in Beaufort u few days since was surprised
to meet on the street a young girl
of his acquantancc who had mysteriously
disappeated from her home a short time
before. Upon inquiry the gentleman
found that the girl was an inmate of a
disreputable house in town, aud 011 his
return home he informed the girl's par
eats of his discovery. A friend was at
once 6cnt here who persuaded the gill to
return to her home.
On Wednesday last a colored sailor on
board the Ironclud Catskill got into an
altercation on board with the Master ut
arms which resulted iu til's slaying of the
sailor. It appears that John A. Jordan
the colored sailor entered the 6ai! room

hailed by the Master at arms who desired
him to come out lie replied that "ho
would conic out when he got what ho
had gone lor." "\\ hereupon the master
at arms whoae name is Monaghan,
an Irishman, went into the sail room
after him in tlie passage way of which
they came to blows, the master at arms
using a sabre bayonet which wa9 wrenched
out of lus hand by the sailor Gordon,
who in turn attempted to use it upon
his adversary. Monaglmm then siez.d a
rifle from the tuck near by, fixed a bayonet
and plunged it into the abdomen
of Jordan who sank upon the floor ex
cl aiming, 'I am stabbed'. He died on
Friday morning. The parties were
separated by thecffoits of the bystaudt rs
and the command of the i fficerj. Monaghnn
was arrested and turned over to the
civil authorities. Slieriif Wilson committed
linn to jail on Friday immediately
after the investigation of the jury of

The county couitnissionsrs met on
Monday and closed their labors this
morning. The treasurer reported the
following balances on hand:
County Funds, $094.82
Deficiency tax 1873-4 1 15(5.18
Past Indebtedness 1872 8,500,00
There were two bids for the $1,000 to
be paid tor the deficiency of 1872. \V.
II. Lock wood off. red $1,010 at a discount
of one-eighth of one pi'r cent, and
II. McGuire offered 1,000 at a discount of
3 1-4 per cant.
The balance of the deficiency tax of
1873-4 was paid out, those h iving claims
receiving 30 per cent which, with 54 pi r
cent previously paid, makes 81 cents on
the dollar paid for the indebtedness of
that year.
The payment of the $9f4,82 on hand f< i
this year brought out a host of creditors

felt obliged to puy some claims in lull
and some others received a portion,
while the unfortunate road overseers and
constables were leit out entirely, much
to their disgust.

the churches at Chester for the relief of
the dcstituteain Colleton and Beaufort
counties. In addition to this seventy
dollars and twenty-five cents were collected
by Capt. J. L. Augurs and fifty
two dollars and seventy-live ccnt3 by
Capt. W. T. D. Cousar laat week. Ten j
dollars, contributed by Catholic congre-1
gations, have been reported. Total con-1
tributions, one hundred and seventy-three |
dollurs.
