^hc Beaufort Tribune. W. M. FHIONC II Kdltor mid Proprlclor WwSm WEDNESDAY*.JUNE 28, "VN itness nnd jurors certificates given at the last term of court arc sold on the street for five cents on the dollar. Thoma9 calls the treasurer's office a flesh pot. No doubt that is what it lias been for some time pttdt. Watermelons have appeared on the; streets but the prices are out of all proportion to the supply of greenbacks. ||f - Wm. Elliott Esq. left for St Louis j last Saturday as a delegate to the Dem-1 t ocratic Convention. We are not inform fed as to his choice for President. The bill equalizing bounties has passed i tlie House by a decisive vote, and the colored volunteer hereabouts thinks lie ' will take his in the bright coin so abundant just n nv. Mr. F. W. Scheper sailed for NewYork last Sunday in his pilot boat F. \V. r Scheper jr. where he expects to have the boat coppered, and do the Ccntcnuiui. Immense quantities of shells nrj being scattered over the town by the authorities, and from the short time they last on the streets, it seems as though some other (substance would be more lasting and economical if used in their stead. The only sales by the sheriff for July will be the personal property of C. E. b "Warren in Beaufort on Tuesday next, ? and at Port Royal on Wednesday, and the property of the Port Roial Cotton Press Co., at Port Royal, on the same day. The Pilot Boy camu into cot, tact on Friday last in St. Helena Sound with the steamer Morgan, the Pilot Boy being struck on the port side forward of the wheelhouse, doing some damage to the ^ rail and bulwarks. The Seaweed arrived on Monday and came up twice yesterday. On her first trip she got aground twice, once trying to get alongside the wharf and the other in endeavoring to go through the cut-off at low water. The Plymouth left yesterday morning for Charleston to as-i*t in the celebration. The flag ship Hartford arrived yesterday with the Admiral. The Standard and Commercial, owned w by George Holmes and Robert Smalls, says no fraud or dishonesty was proved against the treasurer at the last term of court. The grand jury presented Itim tor taking from the taxes of the year 1874 $8,850. as commissions when the law limited his compensation to $2,503. But then we do not pretend to say this was either a fraud or dishonest. * v The children of the A. M. E. Church gave an exhibition, at the church, on Friday night, to a good sized audience, when the sultry weather is considered. The exercises oper.cdwith an address bv the pastor Rev. Mr. Baker, followed by declaimi tions, dialogues and recitations by the children, and closed with an address l?y Rev. J. 13. Middleton ol the M. E. Church. Theso entertainments by the little folks are becoming very popular, another one being promis0 ed tonight in the Tabernacle Baptist j Church. We hope they will meet with | encouragement in their efforts to improve themselves and amuse the public. The school meeting on Saturday was very well attended, Mr. J. C Mayo was elected chairman and Dr. White clerk. The clerk of the board stated that in t making up tho annual report a discrepancy waa discovered, and the board requested an adjournment until they could correct the error. Considerable discussion ensued as to the delay but at L the urgent request of Mr. Gleaves, one of the board, the meeting adjourned over 1 till Saturday next ut 12 m. The schooner W. W. Johnson, former ly Pilot Boat No. 4, of Beaufort, while l4 lying at an anchor off the point nt Sulli W* van's Island in Charleston harbor Tues1 day night, parted her cable and drifting on an ebb tide, struck Drunken J)ick B, Shoal, and partially filled. Upon the i return of the flood she was lelieved from the skoal. She proved uumanagc able, however, and capsized and quickly I sunk in about six fathoms of water. I The crew consisted of the mate J. W. Johnson, and three colored hands. At the time of her going over two of the hands were lost. She afterward*, having ? got rid of her ballast, came to the surface and was anchored near the city. She afterward* went to pieces and proved a totul wreck. f The grand jury for this couuty in 1874 L endeavored to get some light as to the disposition of the illegal capitation tax ft collected for the fiscal jcar 1872 in this county, by.Gcorgc Holmes, county treasurer. For s >n?c good and sufficient E reasons the report called for was never .1 made and the grand jury was induced t<? say no more about it. The grand j uy for this year endeavored to find out * if anything was wrong and appointed :t committe \ wh^, after woikiug for a week, found that two of the books ncrj | missing, although they were told when ! j they began their work that the books | wore all in the office. The court ordered ] | the treasurer to produce the books and J his attorneys answered that 110 such I j books were in existence, but afterwards I found they had been deceived and asked [ 1 the court to permit them to withdraw their answer. The court granted their request and we have not hcai^l of any ' I further action. No charge of fraud is r charged against the treasurer, but the' ? grand jury want the books to verify and r exhonorntc "the best treasurer Beaufort ,' county ever had." 1, Mr. Brisnnne of Brunson has published a book entitled "Ben Botherum" which jA he thinks is just the thing for agents to . net rich in Helling. One chapter is dc- i voted to the exploit of the escape of the steamer1 Piazza' (Planter) from Charles- j ton harbor during the war, and the! < account is the tirst authentic one which i shows the braverv exhibited by Captain! Bob on that great occasion. The prom-j1 isc to divide, however, was not carried t out as agreed upon, but when i | Congress pass:s the hill now before I ii there will best grand divvy all round. 1 I We any "When" tile bill passes. I. i T. P. .Tones was tried in Walterboro ! last Wednesday for the murder of Brown, j and acquitted. lie was defended by1 1 Mr. Whippcr and Judge Farmer, the sol- j icitor being assisted in the prosecution 1 by Mr. F. A. Ilowlett. When the verdict was rendered the court room was ( crowded with colored people .who ] threatened not only to lynch Jones but ( also Mr. Whipper for defending him. i I lie hlicrift was obliged to call out a posse j1 1 of fifty citizens to defend Jones who wns IJ afterwards quietly sent away iu a car- t i riage and is now at liberty. j Mr. Jacob Apple writes us a letter | | correcting the account we gave ot the : encounter between himself and Hamil- < ! ton. He says that lie gave Hamilton no provocation for the assault, but that \ J lie left the court with feelings of regret | i j at the necessity ot his being compelled to i 1 roanrt ? 1...I? IT ' , ? ?' 'that rowdyism will over become the t ; accepted currency for paying old debts We arc informed that Mr. Apple diil j accuse Hamilton of perjury in court, but" i how far that would justify his action on this occasion is not a question for us to j i<locik* Our town unthoriti -8 h ive now a supply of disinfectants.
