We shall hear no mure very soon < f
dry weather alter the heavy and contin'
tied rain that foil all day Sunday and
until Tuesday morning. The rice planters
will now have fresh water for which
they were begtuning to suffer, and from
what we leant they anticipate a large
and profitable crop.
In the Senate, oa Juac 2, Mr. Patterson
introduced a hill for the relief of
Robert Smalls. What the relief prayed
for is we are not informed but it is 110
doubt a claim for services as pilot of the
steamer Planter at the time of her escape.
The verdict of the cornoner's jury in
the case of Mrs. Smith having been given
to the grand jury, that hody gave the
caso a very through investigation, but
elicited no evidence to show that the
deccused lady had been unfaithful to
her Iiusblnd.
The graud jury report'(1 that "After
careful examination of all the circumstances
connected with this case the
grand jury can see no cause to suspect
that this unfortunate lady came to her
death by any other hand out her own."
The following is a copy ol ttie papji

The grand jury of Wil'iambur?
following tbc example of the grand jury
in this county, have appointed a committee
to examine into the affairs of the
county officers. We hope should they
discover any mnl-administration that
their researches will not be denounced na

Mr. Editor.
We sug"cst that some m^asur s be
taken to stay the incoming tide of vice
among us. There seems to he no obstacle
in the way of an easy establishment
of whatever form of iniquity onechooses to
introduce. Willing landlords arc found
to rent their buildings at a high price to
whoever may ?PP'y, ?? matter for what
' purpose required. Vice is contagious
and these plague spots will consume the
vitals of our moral and pecuniary prosperity.
Let fidelity to right and
conscience on the part of those who dep'ore
the evil among us decide the term
of its existence. *
