states that the section of the l?ill estab- j

lost.
At the lu*t meeting of c? tncil the com '
in it tee on wells and pumps was author-'
Li zed to employ Mr. Sclmuntclli to clean 1
the town wells nt the rate of $2.59 aach. |
A refreshing rain, long needed by our j
Sk planters, fell on Monday and came just j
in time to prevent ,tlie growing crops'
from b.-ing entirely burned up.
k I>r. Jlnuckcl will remain at the Sea
Island Hotel until the lu-,1 id' this week..
I hose in need of tin* services* of a demist I
would do well to call on him.
The firemen were out on parade on1
"Monday and with their handsome uni-l

The county commissioners arranged
last week with the treasurer to take up
and cancel the certificates given for Iml
nncc duo on teachers claims. The checks
issued by the board arc returned to them
and the treasurer holds as his vouchers
the original certificates given the teachers j
by the scliool tiu^tecs. Wo took the,
? trouble to ask the treasurer when the mo- \
1 hcv would be paid out to the teachers
1
but he said lie "didn't know."
A great-deal 1ms been said about the
low price at which o.lr paupers uic fed '
?ten and seven-eighths cents per day? j
but we see that the poor of Sumter coun i
ty are supported by contract for thirty
dollars a year, which is a little lower
than we pay. and the grand jury seems to
y think it satisfactory, aud approve of the'
arrangement
??? ? ?
Our Lawtonrvillo correspondent reviews I
the beauties of justice as executed in bis;
section, owing to the irresponsibility of
theconstnblc and the uncertainty of the j
available jury. To those of our readers !
who have like complaints we would say, |
get the facts together sufficiently to make
out a case und bring the matter before!
the grand jury at the next term of court, |
} and justice can be assured. Judge Matter!
^ delights in dealing with such cases and
with such juries as we have this year the
oppressed can blame no one but himself
if he longer submits.
The following petit jury was drawn
last Wednesday, and is by far the best'
we have had for years. The color line isj
evenly drawn, there being eig .t< on white
tin.I cipi t .?< 11 colored.

Our community was terribly shocked,
last Monday to hear that Win. Hutto,
who shot the marshal of Allfiidale, had j
been acquitted by a Barnwell jury and !
was again at bis home. We understand I
the grounds of his acquittal was temporary
insanity, and when his many lawless
acts are re.mcmbeted it does seem us
though the man was crazy. Slill if a
man can go into a bar room and deliberately
shoot down an ofiicer and escape
on the pica of insnnity such a man is
very unsafe at liberty. The whole com
mumty i9 outraged and the lives of all
in danger if such things can be permitted.

under the influence ofliquor is the terror
of the section where ho lives. Other
