Tiie Bsautort Trib.no. \v. 31. FUENCIl JQilltor im?l I'l-oprlcl \>i* - 1 1 * ? WEDNESDAY, Al'RIL 12, 1#7?. The Swntara and monitor Mahopao arrived at Port Roytii on Monday from I Pcnsncola. The Savannah AW* says that the banquet to the excursionists furnished al Port Royal was ordered by the mayor ot Atlanta, and that it cost $:M0 cash and Tcalized only $180. The Shaw omt and monitor Aja\! arrived on Friday last fiom Pcnsac'da. The Ajax lias small p ix on hoard and was' put in quarantine. Thed isease is supp >m-i] to have lx>en brought from soma recruits j from New Orleans. The drun fish season is at iis height and , the fishermen are like the sands on thej sea shore, and are reaping a rich harvest' of green-backs. The sailors in the navy are also reveling in an unlimited supply of drum which they catch from the decks j of the vessels. The steamer Thomas Morgan is run-! rung between Beaufort and the fleet.! making three trips daily. It is to be j hoped she will find encouragement! enough to remain permanently which slw ! will do it'it pays. When the five small monitors till arrive, they will he sent to Savannah to lay in i fresh water. As there will likelv onlv 1 be a guard left aboard the number of! men necc?mrv to look after them will not ' be over fifty all told. - ? -? Congressman Smalls and Ilogc have I hern laboring with the Secretary of War in regard to the Savannah Hack River! and protested against improvements! contemplated in that section. We are glad to chronicle the fact that Mr. Congressman Smalls has got his coat off and gone to work at something. A number of our citizens indulged in a visit to the fleet on Friday last and arrived just in time to see the close of) the race between the Brooklyn and Con- i gross. The party went on hoard the Dictator and v. ere highly pleased with tho great curiosities on 'he vessel, although none of them express d a wish j to vounteer as coal- passjrse in the dun- ! geon. The second great race between the: crews of the Brooklyn and Congress came off on Friday. The distance was five j miles, each boat carrying twelve oars.! and resulted, as did the previous race, in i lhvor of the Congress boys. Just before | the start the friends of the Brooklyn' crew offered a large sutn in bets and at | odds but the whole was not taken as it was! thought that the Brooklyn was certain j of victory. The result is sai.l to be owing j to the excellent training of the winning! crew whose rowing was a marvel of,porter- i tion and time. Seventeen hundred dollars only changed hands on the result. The county commissioners at their Iffst I lnccting granted to the Plank Road; Company twenty feet of the road between the Beaufort line and the rai road d' pot. Ills to ho hoped that this company will! iit once gat to worl; and give us a good road us far rs the dcp< t, and then they i can take their time to contin ue it to Port; Royal. So many charters have been' granted to our citizens without their ever ! amounting to anything that we should i have but little faith in this enterprise but J For the fact that some of the incorporators! *11 in t\f lnoinojj an 1 5f lK<?** q.?t* t La 1 road shall be built it will be done. We hope there will be no delay in this much needed improvement. It having been rumored that Dr. Warren, who has been tn Washington for some days, would not return, his ; reditor* on Saturday lust alt ached his pr >p rt? in Beaufort and Port Royal, seizing everything that was portable. The Club House was closed and the Vansion House placed in charge of Rogers late clerk at the Sen Island. There is s' md talk of puling the Dr. in bankruptcy which would be an excellent idea if the credit >rs desirfd | to get nothing. The Sea Island Hotel fuoiture went through the bankrupt court, and the proceeds amounting to over $3000 were all swallowed up in costs except less than $300, and if the Dr.'s Creditors could be as successful they trnight makeup the balance of costs after all the property was gone out ol heir own pickets. A dispitc'i from Dr. Warren said he would leave yesterday f.. ? r..j utui lut utMiiiun, One of our most esteemed friends, a resident of Port Royal, desires us to st:(tt that we fabricated when we asserted that the mail for the fleet was soon to he delivered at the Beaufort post oflJce. As we have a great dislike to acknowledging ourselves iu error we will qualify the assertion hv stating that the mail Trill be delivered both at. Port Royal and Heaufort hereafter, and the launch will come up every morning and evening stopping ot? its ?ctufn t* Port Royal to gt'f the mail and some of the choice supplies that can he had of the enterprising Wilkins, without whom Port Royal would he a nonentity. The usual crowd of hungry claimants crowed the commission ersjruom all clamorous for their pay and most of litem succeeded in getting sonicthing.
