?Turn them on the wrong side, and t]
sew them over and over in the ordinary 8
way. They will last longer and look *
better if mended on the wrong side. p
Torn them back again, and go over them f,
with a clean towel dipped in skim milk p
and rubbed lightly on white oastile soap, b
wearing them during the process and 11
until they are quite dry. 7
A simple method of supplying mois- P
tore to a room heated by a furnace is to ?
hang a wet towel over a chair in front of b
the register, and the water will evaporate tl
and be taken up by the atmosphere as n
fast as it is required. This is a plan *
which every one can test for themselves. p
An English physician, having learned
that two of his young lady patients had ^
exhibited symptoms of arsenical poison- ri
ing after wearing tarlatan drosses of a ti
green tint, analyzed the ooloring mat- *
ter contained in the same and found ?
considerable traces of arsenic. This
should be a warning to ladies in shop- b

Ralalas Chicken* "by Hud." b
Mr. T. B. Rogers, the famous poultry *
raiser at Wethersfteld, Oonn., has t!
" seneed the precise thing," and has in- a
vented what he calls an "artificial
mother," for the rearing of young ohick- ?
ens. He estimates that at least fifty per ?
cent, of chickens hatched are lost by
suffering from cold, by being stepped tl
on by th eir mother, by cats and other H
animals, and in various other ways. He
also finds that chickens to be profitable, m
should be hatched in the winter. He has
i atchedthreebroods in nine weeks with one n
hen?that is, he takes away the chiokens u
as soon as hatched, and places fresh eggs ?
under the hen, and in this way keeps ?
her bnsy propagating chickens. Mr. Ql
Rogers' next move was to get some in- 01
vention that would take care of the u
chickens when hatched, and he has constructed
what he calls an " artificial
mother." This a box with two compart- &
ments, and abont three feet long by two si
and a half wide. In the rear is a lid tc
covered with wool, shotting within three f<
inches of the bottom ; this is ont off tl
from the front part by a strip that can u
be raised on hinges. The front is pro'
tected by lattice work, giving plenty of *
air and light, and on the outside are tiu

water are placed. The chickens can a
easily get their bills into these, and when v
they have got their fill they can ran an- T
der the wool-covered lid, which is so *
soft and oonffortable that they imagine R
they are under the old hen's wings. Mr. f?
Rogers had in one of these boxes a brood
of twenty-one chiokens. They were as t!
lively as orickets, and seemed perfectly *
at ease Mr. Rogers deals exclosively
in Light Brahmas, and thinks they are n
the best layers, as well as the moat pro- o
fitable fowls for the table. ?

Says a correspondent of the Ohio ?
Farmer: At certain seasons of the -u
year, rams are apt to develop their oombative
propensities, and those who keep a
several of them together often have n
trouble on aocoant of their injuring *
each other. It is well known that they b
always " back-up" to get a start to a
butt. Stop their baokimr-up and von 1
dinconoert them entirely. l*o do this, r
take a light stick (a piece of broom han- 0
die will do), abont two or two and one t
Half feet long. Sharpen one end and n
lash the other end securely to lys tail:
the sharpened end will then draw harmlessly
on the ground behind as long as
his majesty goes straight ahead abont
his business; bnt on the attempt to 1
" back-up " he is astonished to find an
effectual brake in the rear. Don't laugh *
and call this " all gammon but if sou p
hare a butting nun, try it, and the time u
to lau^h will be when you see him jump f
out sideways, and whirl round and a
round, tiring to inspect the machine, *
which will keep behind him. ?

A Curious Book.?There is a curl- C
ocrfty of literature in England called e
"The Wordless Book," so called be
cause, after the title page, it contains *
not a single word. It is a religious al- t
Sty, devised, it is said, by an evan- c
ml enthusiast, and the thought is in k
symbolical color of its leaves, of ,
which two are black, two rose-red, two fc
pure white, two pure gold. The blaok
symbolises the nnxegenerate heart of .
man; the red, the blessed redemption: :
the white, the purity of the soul 1
" washed in the blood of the Lamb;"
the gold, the radiant joys of eternal fe- *
lieity.

er The Albany Journal tells this story: |
ty Ex-Aid. J. W. Serviss, formerly of this I
city, now of Amsterdam, some seven
years s.noe resolved to play a practical m
n. joke upon "Steve" Arnold, of the Ar I
d<1 nold House, of th*t village. Needing n
e confederate, he took into his confidence ||
[d, " Dave" Manny, ef the Manny House,
rk The two proceeded to the Arnold 0
at House, where Serviss stated to Arnold of
that himself and friend had made a bet, c
he and that they had agreed to submit the o
. matter to his decision, the bet to be c
paid as soon as he should decide who T
" was the winner. Feeling honored at *
ng this mark of confidence, he of the Ar- )
r,i nold House at onoe signified his assent ~
Qd to the arrangement. The ex-alderman 5
'V- then stated the bet as follows: He (Ser- ?
ed visa) had bet Manny the drinks for the he
entire party at Arnold's that when the l'
spire of the new Catholic cathodral fell it
would fall to the west, while Manny *
" had bet that it would fall to the east. nt
Then, calling for drinks for the entire j
^ party, he blandly informed the umpire ?
it. that as soon as he decided the bet th'o P
?y loser would pay the soore. Of course 3
is the laugh was upon Arnold, and fluids rj
ell to the tune of twenty shillings were ab- ?
ed stracted from the bar. He looked puzzled ^
ad for a moment, then quietly producing a ]
rd book, carefully noted down the terms of ?!
aa the bet. During the gale of last week IV
kil the spire of that cathedral fell. It fell r

rk Arnold, who drew on his Ulster as if he 3
. had been greased, drove up to his house ~
as rapidlv as possible, produced the \

and almost before the ex-alderman had D7
heard of the fall of the spire, he was 2
presented with a bill for twenty ahil- ^
