This section wns visited last Friday
by a very severe gale of wind accompanied
with extreme cold. A heavy frost
during the night furiously injured ail
unprotected gardens, and in so.ne placet
ice was formed. The storm continued
up to yesterday with a heary fall of rain
and that miserably dtmp cold tbat-makes
every ouc dread to leave tlie fireside.
A case was tried before Trial Justice
Hucka of Georgetown on' Monday last,
which involved some important principles
in reference to the pilot law. In
tbia case the evidence showed that a[
pilot spoke a vessel outside of the bar, |
instructed the Captain how he might j
get over the bar, and left him to board a i
larger v<s*sl.further out; another pilot j
actually boarded the first vessel just be ,
fora she crossed the bar, which was not j
buoyed out. Tbe first pilot, claimed
pilotage, which was paid him, and this
action was to recover the same' amount
of pilotage from the master of the

to entitle him to pilotage, and that the

The grand excursion of Noithcrn and
1 Western Merchants that was expected nt
Port Royal on Saturday afternoon did
not arrive till alxdit eleven o'clock owing
to a smash tip on the Port Royal
Railroad near Jtrunson's station. The

preparation* for the reception of the
