WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 1878.
The British bark Alliance arrived at
the mill of Robbins Boddlngton & Co.
Saturday to load with lumber for England.
The thrce-masti-d schooner Hattie
Turner arrived nt Waterhouso and Bicker's
wharf on Friday with furniture, lime
and groceries for George Waterhouse.
The ladies of the Baptist church will
hold a festival in Lyceum Hall Friday
evening, the proceedb to he u#ed in improving
the interior of the church. This
laudable object will merit the support of
nil and the occasion will afford our citiBoua
aa opportunity to contribute to a
good cause in a very agreeab-e manner.

Hon. J. K. JJillson, State Superintcn
dent of schools, has made the apportionment
of the school funds for the year
1870. The whole appropriation iB
$250,000, -Beaufort county receives
$13,210.40, the school attendance being

The time tor the pavmcut of taxes has

not now attach until the first of April.
Congressman d.nulls has i itroduced
bills for the relief "t' Paul Hamilton and

fort;ot the hereof Mrs 1. .M. Port eons,
late of Be mtort, and of Henry MeK<e, or
his heirs, of Beaufort, all of which were re

The race between the firemen of the
Brooklyn and Congress camo off last
"Wednesday afternoon. The crews
started from the loweT buoy and rowed
three miles. The Congress crew won by
four minutcB'nftcra very exciting contest.
The great attraction of this race was the
novel oars-fire ehovele-with which the
rowers were more familiar than the usual
sort. The defeated crew arc determined
to have another contest and show tlie
Congross boys that they are not invinciable.
The work on the sea wall is progressing
finely and is as perfect a success, so
lhr as ignoring the plumb unci rule is
concerned,as it was possible with the
means at hand to make it. Some think
it looked better on the ground where it
nail lain ror twenty years, out tins is sun
? matter of opinion. If the cement lmd
set, as we are informed it lind, before
being used we may soon see the wall
where for so many years it ornamented
the Bay.
It has been brought to our notice that
?nur agricalturaPCongressman has neglected
to furnish corn to some who had
reason to expect better treatment. Others
again complain of the condition in which
the gra;n reaches their hands, they thiuk,
and perhaps not unjustly, as this is
election year, that the corn might be put
through thejgovernmcnt mill before being
mailed. Perhaps the custom house
axe is all that Mr. Smalls has time to
grind, however.

Our inriustrious burglar has been heard
from again showing that he is still alive
to the necessity of keeping our watchA
man out of the dry goods boxes o'nights.
This time the one favored with his
attentions was Rev. Mr. Jones, pastor of
the Baptist church. An entrance was
k effcted by forcing open tho shutters on
the piazza when the intruder satisfied his
wants with a gold watch and chain anc\
a pair of pants. Mr. Jones regrets the
loss of the watch and would give a liberal
reward for its return, and we doubt not
ha would like to pray with his noctural
visitor.
The steamer Carrie brought a large
party of excursionists from Savannah on
? Monday to visit the^flcet. Not being able
to go alongesido tbe monitors the
officers of tho Congress sent a steam
launch to their assistance and all who
desired were safely transferred. Once
on board the Congiesi, the officers
extended every courtesy in showing the
appointments of a man-of-war, and when
the visitors had become satisfied with
their inspections, the decks were cleared,

unexpected, and was enjoyed with much
zest, as few if any had ever enjoyed the
novelty of dancing on board of a manof-war
before. Whilst guests on the
Congress, the visitors wero extended an
invitation to partake of lemonade and
other refreshments. The time passed
rapidly by, and It was nearly six o'clock
when the party bade farewell to their
hospitable and courteous hosts, and
returned home.
The adjournment of the General
As?cmbly is delayed by the trial of Judge
Montgomery Moses, which is progressing
very slowly. The evidence thus lar
adduced seems to be amply sufficient to
secure liis Conviction of using his judicial
position for the purpose of extorting
money fVom county officials.
Theatrical.-Wednesday evening last

assembled in the dining room of the Sea

manner. The guests afterwards indulged
in a hop which was kept up till a
late hour.

The Are engines were dragged all over
town yesterday morning in a vain endeavor
to find the cause of some one
ringing the fire bell. It wus decided
afterwards that the alarm was started on
account of the burning of some rubbish
in she yard of the Catholic clffirch. The
new Phoenix made its first appearance on
the streets and was bowled ulong in
lively style by the younger portion of
our community. A little paint has transformed
this rejected machine into a very
handsome engine and if it is always as
prompt as yesterday may yet l?e of
service.
The Town Council met last Wednesday
