Col. Fillebrown, of the ComptroHerGeneral's
office, was in town on Monday
looking a fter the affairs of the past and
present county treasurer, and seemed well
aatisti id with his inspection of the books
and papers.
Dr. Wilder has been appointed nnd
crnfiriiid as trial justice for Hilton
Head. The whole United States Navy
is within his jurisdiction, nnd if the boys
dont behave the Dr. will make it hot for
mem.
The men employed in raising the fallen
bc? wall along Bay street are getting
along well with the work. The wall is
to be entirely rebuilt, and the ground
adjoining graded bo as to be an ornament
to the town.
We learn that Sir. F. W. Scheper intends
puichasing a steam launch which
will be employed in making regular trips
between the fleet and Beaufort for the
accommodation of the ofliccrs and men
who wish to vi>it our town.

The Albert Thomas is loading phosphate
at Bennett's dock. This vessel is
in no way connected with the Standard,
although the phosphatic tendencies of
the editor might confuse the public as to
whether he or this vessel of the same
na.ne was being stuffed with the valuable
mineral.
Mainr Delany whs convicted in the
court of General Sessions in Charleston
last Fridny of breach of truBt and larceny.
This case has been hanging over his head
for several j^eara and has at last resulted
in hia conviction, which must bo very
annoying to tue ?>iaior.
The chandelier in the dining room of
Dr. Warren's club house fell to the table
beneath, last Friday uight, bi inking the
lampa and scattering kerosene over the
floor. The oil caught fire and destrojed \
quite a lot of table lir.ea and crockery j
before it was extinguished.
Thebum-b:at business is getting to
be very extensive as the fleet increases.
Several of our merchants are running
boats to supply the wants of the various
messes, and we hear that three steam
launches are to be brought here to take
the place of the uncertain sail boats
now used.
tw The entertainment by the Lyceum |
last Thursday evening was witnessed by
a smaller audience than usaal. The
affair waa gotten up rather hastily giving
the members hnrd y time enough to learn
their parts, and constant prompting of
some of the actors rather spoiled the
plays undertaken by them. The Skidniore
Guards under the leadership of
Clancy was a perfect success, and remin
utti one 01 ine cays woen toe "meiish"
used to parade our streets on election
days, clad in the most fantastic uniforms,
armed with guns they did not know how
to load and for which they were never
entrusted with cartridges by their political
generals.
The County Commissioner*.
The county commisioners met Monday
evening and the whole session was taken
up by the reading of the minutes of the past
two weeks, covering twenty-two pages, ex*
cept about an hour spent by the chaitman
argufying' with the veteran road overseer
Pompey Coaxum, who could not be
made to believe tlmt the comity is not
still liable for the imaginary salary of J
these parasites of fifty dollars a year for
carrying a commission around in their
pockets. The gieat fault of the present
b ;nrd is a willingness to s(>ciid so much
of their time in endless arguments und
on matters of the most trivial importance.
This is the principal reason wo fail to
report their proceedings. We cannot
afford to hang around the office for two
or three davsin order to ren.irf business
which could as well he done in as many
houra. There Is rooui here for reform
which would be to the great pecuniary
1-ei etit of the taxpayers, and the relief
of those whose misfortune it is to have
claims against the county.

The first thing in order was a petition
handed in by A. A. Bradley asking the

auditor, which caused a lively discussion
as to the propriety of poking so large a
sum for a book whijh cau well be dispensed
with.
The treasurer made the following

The board met again at jfour o'clock
and a hungry crowd greeted them with
a Bhower of claims and much talk. The
chairman nftcr a tedious delay became
wearied with the importunities o! roadoverseers
and constables and took refuge
in the auditors office. The treasurer had
reported on hand of county tunds $734 i
which was a prize the audience was
bound to secure. After a delay of three
houtBduring which nothing was done it
leaked out that instead of the above sum
being on hand there was hut $832,
which, the chairman explained, was
caused by the previous meeting having
overdrawn the amount reported by the
treasurer to the extent of $402. When
this became known many claimants who
had waited hours left disgusted, and"
after paying $101) to the clerk for services
the munificent sum of $08 was issued to
other parties who were willing to accept
80 per cent on their claims, and at 8 p. ui.,
the session ended.
