work trying to supply the boys with pics
and bread. There are several inquiries
for houses, as some of the officers w^nt
their families here and prefer to seep
house. There is uo reason why real estate
should not advance in value in our town.
Several residences are for sale cheap now

^ |dir~Mr. Adolph Sachs, a merchant of
Beaufort, closed Lis store Sunday evening
the 18th, and since that time his
creditors have been unable to hear from
him. The store was pretty well filled
with goods when lust seen open, but now
it is reported by those who can see
farthest through a key hole that the
goods have all been removed. No one
seems to know what disposition was
I made of the stock, but some people think
they could made a pretty close guess.

their own spring, and as there is no other

any thonght of a change while the
officers assert that they have the best
water hereof any Southern station.

Sec T. lie it ordained by the Intcndant and
Warders of the Town of Beaufort, in Council assembled:
That-a tax for the year 1870 for tlie sum* and ill
the manner hereinafter prescribed, shall bo raised j
and paid into the Treasury of the Town for the use i
and service thereof, that is to say:

since Jnitumy 1st. 1870 shall pay in lieu of the tax
on personal property u special tax for the balance
of the year at the rate of, per month, $2.00
Sue. IV. That all taxes on personal property
Imposed hy the provisions of this Ordinnnco shah
have reference as to possession aud valuation to
the Cirst day of December, 1875, and bo for the year j
beginning .January 1st. 1870, to December 31, 1876.
Sec. V. That the committee uppoiuted to raise
supplies for the year 1870 sh:tll constitute, together
with tho Intendunt. the board of assessors, whose
duly it shall be to assess each person or coiporatlon
such amounts as in their judgment they may deem
just and proper; which assessment shall be duly
recorded in a book which sbull l>c open for Inspection
and revision for the space of one week from
date of public noticu,|witbin which time the parties
so assessed shall have the privilege of correcting
tho same, tinder oath, beforo the hoard of assessors
