The llilng to Do.
An exohange says: It has been the (
custom in the Astor family for three |
generations to deposit $100,000 in bank ,
at the birth of a son or daughter, the j
money and interest to be given to the <
child when he or she became of age. '
To which the New York Sun very 1
earnestly adds: The custom is an J
admirable one, and should be followed ,
in all well-ordered families. We i
suggest, however, that a liberal parent <
would deposit at least a million dollars
at every birth until his family got up J
to ten or a dozen. After that he might
be justified in leaving off a few hundred ,
thousands. Still, no one is justified in <
making it less than one hundre 1 thousand
dollars.

The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser,
in plaiu English ; or, Me licine Simpli- |
fled," by R. V. Pierce, M. D? counselor-inohief
of the board of physicians and surgeons j
at the World's Dispensary. Whoever helps
humanity in its straggle with its inherent :
weakness and diseases, to bear or oure, is its j
benefactor. Ignorance is not only of itself a
cause of disease and mortality, but it is the '
enemy of every effort to cure or mitigate.
Nothing will so speedily remove this cause se
knowledge (an elementary one at least) of the
diseases to which we are beir, as well ss those
superinduced by oar own imprudence. Dr.
Pierce has rendered, in our judgment, a benefactor's
service, both to the afflicted and to
the profession, in his diagnosis of the diaesses <
treated of, and in the presentation of the
philoeophio principles involved in their cause
and removal. He is sparing of remedies, and
usually prescribes such as are safe in un- j
skilled hands. As a book merely of abetraot
know ledge, it is exceedingly readable and interesting,
especially the following subjects :
Crebral physiology, human temperaments, psen- (
do-liygiene, the nursing of the siok, sleep, | ,

Burnett's Cocoaine,

Burnett's Cocoaine,
aa invaluable remedy for
DANDRUFF.
Boston, Oct. 30.
I have uied leas than a bottle. The dandruff and
ba irritation which caused it, have entirely disapleared,
and my hair was never before in so good
ondition. ^ A. A. FULLER.
BALDNESS.
C mi;ago, May is, 1871.
Since the recent use of your " Cocoaine," my preiouslv
bald head has been covered by a luxuriant
rowtfi of hair. I had always esteemed your prepaation
as a dressing, knowing many persons who redded
it very highly as such, but never before knew
iow valuable it was as a restorative.
J. G. LEWIS.
LOSS OF HAIR.
Bancca, March 3, 1868.
Your " Cocoaine" is the only dressing for the hair
ised in my family for the last eight years. It not
mly stopped' my wife's hair from coming out, but inreased
its growth. I am also under obligations to
his same " Cocoaine " for saving my own hair, which
'as very fast coming out previous to using this
aluable preparation. J. C. MITCHELL.
IRRITATION OF THE SCALP.
Watkrvillb, Mb , Sept. if.
I purchased a bottle only, for the purpose of a hair
Iressipg; but, to my'surprise, it hw entirely removed
he irritation of so long standing. I have recomaended
it to several of my friends, who were afflicted
a the same way, and it has wholly irradicated the
iisease. JOSEPH HILL, Jr.
HAIR-DRESSING.
New York, Sept. as.
For some time past I have been using your Cocoane,
and think it far preferable to anything I hava
