If this bill should pass almost
every one who lost property by the
tax Bale would accept the terms, and
many who are in great need would be
the recipients ol quite a sum of money.
The proceeds of the sales amounts to
over six hundred thousand dollars, the
most of which was received lor lands
on Port Roynl and St Helena islands.
This would also settle the question of
tax-titles W hich has been such a hindrance
to the prosperity of this section,
where three fourths of the propcity is
held under government guarantees.

Pursuant to Section 4 of an Act enti
tied "An Act to provide for the redemp
tion and sale of lands held by the United
States under the several acts levying direct
taxes and for other purposes," approved
June 8, 1872. and also to Section 2G
of iho Act entitled "An Act to amend
exi-ting customs and internal revenue
laws and for other purposes," approved
February 8, 1875, the Commissioner of
Internal Revenue, under the direction of
the Secretary of the Treasury, hnsordcred
the sale at public auction to the highest
bidder on Thursday the
:50th day of December. 1873,
at 12 M., at the Court House door in the
town of Ileflufort, County seat of Item,
fort. Co.. S. all the unredeemed I.md;
held by the United States in said County
under the several acts for levying direct
tuxes, except suc h lands as hare been reserved
by the United States as School
Farms and for Military, Naval, or other
public purposes.
These lands consist of town lots with
tlir improvements in the Town of Iteiu
fort, and vaiious tracts of farm lands
situated on what are known as the Sea
Islands, in St. Luke's and St. Helena
Parishes.
The town lots will be sold separately,
and tho farm lands in lots often acres or
fractional parts thereof, according to the
survey made by the United States Direct
Tax Commissioners for Smith Carolina.
The right to uuike one bi 1 on each par
eel put up is reserved by the United
States.
