J. K. Prim as whose arrest for burglary
whs mentioned last week was yes
terday liberated on bail. Sammy Green
and George Holmes are his bondsmen.
ISfWnlly Green is about establishing
a hack lino from Beaufort to Port
Royal, which will be a great convenience
to our citizens and wc hope to see
him sustained in his enterprise.
i?TA liunting.party composed of J.

JSfOnc of our merchants lost a few
pieces of calico a few days ago, and suspecting
a certain damsel he canic down on
licr father for the money in a way that is
differently described, and was paid ten
dollars for the stolen articles. The
mulch ted man after pondering over his
missing X called on a trial justice and the
ease was finally compromised by tlie merchint
paying twenty-live dollars to let
the matter drop.
hi Tuesday of last week Thomas

were burned to death. The origin
of the tire is unknown.
The grnud jury of Charleston county
have found true bills ngninst Martin K.
Dclancy for breach of trust and grand
larceny. So says the Union Herald.
The Rev. W. II. Milburn, the blind
preacher, will accept ' engagements to
lecture the coining season. Mr. Milburn
has added several new lectures -to those
which have already given him a reputation
in Europe and America as one of
the most pleasing ofjmbtic speakers.
How would if do for the Beaufort
Lyceum to engnge Mr. Milburn for one
lecture ? V ... . ..
Zr$?~ The new puper ft is proposed to
start in Charleston is to be CAlled the
Commercial Adt>erti?er with T.,r?w..
llnndtill of Georgia as its editor. There
should be room in a city ot' fifty thou
ean d inhabitants for two daily papers,
mid we wish the new enterprise success.
Never did our cotton merchants exp;rience
such difficulty in getting hold of
the coveted staple as this year, and some
of them are so disgusted with' the ruinous
practice of sending out runners
that they despair of making a show ol
being in tlic business. The crop is very
short and many of the small planter:
have learned that by keeping their cotton
intact that they are enabled about Christmas
to ob am a In tte; prico> . and dc

It is not possible, at present, .to <sti

llcauforl Lyceum.
The entertainment given by our Lyceum
last Thursday evening was both
pleasing and interesting, and from the
many flattering and commendatory remarks
of a large and appreciative uiulilence,
it may be considered a complete
success. Some of the characters in'"Old
Phil's Birthday" were very well sustained,
especially Mm J- Boyce as Maria Ilardi
rcss, who seems natural and at home in
every role she undertakes. Miss Harms
in the character of Blanch Howard was
juite effective. Mr Lockwood as Old
| Phil the porter, was very creditable and
'received deserved approbation; so alsr
Mr. Clancy who rendered the*part of OKI
Phil's son faithfully ami with consider

In ihc laughable f.*rc of "To Paris and
I back (or ? 5,"-all seemed to have rccov
' crcd lroin the little natural hesitation
! ami restraint in the first piece and it was
! given with much spirit, and humor,
j 'l'lie whole tiitirtnininent was most
i creditable for this young society, givinp
I promise of richer and better things in its
' maturity.
Not the least pleasing feature of tin
i evening, was the fine performance on the
; piano of young Mr. Richard Pollitzer,
i who rendered some of the finest music
! of "Wagner, Lizst, Beethoven &n, with
skill and taste*

so tiiat it is doubtful if the prisoner
can beheld. In his appeal to the city
court of Savanah Mr. Montmollin claims
that be is not the person mentioned in
the requisition, that he is not a fugitive
from justice in South Carolina, that the
warrant is void, and bccauso of the corruption
and venality of the officers,
whose duty it ii to enforce the laws of the
State of South Carolina, would preclude
the possibility of his having a fair hearing
in said State, by reason of which, as ucit.
i/.en of Georgia, he claims tho right to the
protection of her lawn and an impartial
investigation by her courts.
It is well known that Mr. Montmnlliu
h;ia frequently visi'cd this county since
his trial, but no effort has been uiade to
secure his arrest until a reward is joffercd,
and ofTcred by a board that have
never been known to pay any of the
rewards promised.
