of the October term of court; Juiors and

the whole.

* fcyLast Friday right Hilton Head
Winaroused from its slumbers by aery of
? fire. The cause of the alarm was the
burning of the building formerly occupied
by John Franz ns a store, now owned by
It. C. Melntirc Esq., in which was stored
a buggy, c?rt and lot of blades, all ol
which were burnt with the house. The
lire was no doubt incendiary.
fcSfTlie board of county commission
c'rs of Abbeville county have decided to
* grant no liquor licences outside of incorporated
towns. When our commissioners
do the same thing the tuillenium will have
arrived, and the sage of Oakland will
iinve no occasion to visit Beaufort after
he tirst s03.mil of court, till another years
taxes nrc collected.
A meeting of the depositors in the
Frctdmens Bunk was called lust Wednesday
evening at the M. K church by
^ Robert Smalls to consider what action
, should he taken to enable claimants to
secure the promised dividend. But tew
attended and nothing was done, most of
the'depositors having already deposited
their book; witli George Roberts for
collection, and desired no change.
??
fcffTriul Justice T. II. Fan held an
Inquest near Graliamvillc last Saturday
on the body ol a colored man who bad
cdidcntly made a hotly of himself by trying
to blow in the muzzle of a loaded
shot guu while liis toe was on the cock.
As the gun was able to blow the hardest
the victim surrendered all the wind iu his
lwdy, and laid down with a head full of
hot, aud has gone to the happy hunting
grounds wlicc they dont use such obstinate
weapons.
&?(y**Thc members of the Beaufort
Lyceum promise us n rich trcut tomor
row eve at their new place of entertainment
on Mr. Oddl's premises.
^ Iu addition to the dramatic feature of
the performance, some excellent piano
music will be rendered.
Last evening the burglar who has
given us a rest for so long paid a visit to
Mie store of Jamrs Odell, and having
forced a window secured a box containing
thirty six dollars in money and some
jewelry. As usual nothing was disturbed
except money and valuables, the visitor
not^even tasting a gunrer nor a pitce of
cr .nbcrry pie. We <V?nt believe this
enterprising iorager will ever hi eau,;bt
We arc indebted to Mr. L. S. I anglcy,
county auditor, lor an abstract of tin: lax
duplicate tor this county for the present
year. From tins it upptfirs that the to
tal value of personal property amounts
to $1.053.116., and the total value of
* farms $2.270.000., of real estate in towns
? and villages $307.260., and of ltoil Roads
$807.090., showing a grand total of real
and personal property subject to tax of
$4 .438.438., an increase over the previous
year of $171,239. "We arc glad to see the
valuation of taxable property has increased,
as the apologists for the county debt
have claimed that it was augmented by
a decrease in taxes consequent on a lower
assessment. We have no space today for
a detailed list of the personal property,
but will say that the value of dogs is
$15,257. their number being 3.047., while
we have 4.939 sheep and goats valued at
$8.341., and only $23,029 of greenbacks
showing that we could bear some inflation
without bursting.
The county commissioners met last
week for the purpose of making their es
tiinat03 for the year commencing Nov. 1.

i The past. year lies been a trying one to j
the county commissioners. Their path;
I was smooth and prospects comparatively i
i bright until the Feb. term of court when j (
I their means that was to last them the
I year out was so nearly exhausted that
they had to sequestrate the icst iu order
to have something for the June term, and
then the June torfffdid not get it. From
tliut time they have been short, and the
< county's creditors have been abusive; one ;
of their number resigned, and then the
I iimtrNK was at time9 inclined to make j 1
a muss of matters. But the year is end- i
ed, the county is probably $8,000. deeper
iu debt than at the beginning of the year,!
and the volume of past indebtedness j
decreased nearly an equal amount, so'
that five mills have only, as it were, paid |
the expenses of the county for the year J
to say nothing of the receipt of over
five thousand dollars for liquor licences. '
We hope we shall have no occasion to
condemn nny of the acts of the board
during the coming year, and shall gladly
do what we can to to give them credit j ^
for a wise and just administration of the 2
affairs of the county. Wc also might give
a little advice if occasion offered as
wc have an immense stock 011 hand the
accumulation of many ycais, and which
lias grown rusty for want of use. a
With a small body of citizens, deter- j
mined, vigilant and intelligent, 111 every
| court house town, who would devote
j themselves to nttending the meetings of
: their boards of county commissioners and
I watching the business transacted, one- ?
half of the extravagance and fraud which 1
I
loads them with debt would be proven- ,
ted. In uinc cases out of ten these c
meetings are now held virtually in secret- "
The intelligent business men of a commit- ]!
nity will toil and worry many hours to
j make the money to pay taxes, but they "
will not spare an hour a month to watch J
"how the money is spent.
Let no one say t hat such tvatchfuluess y
would be time wasted. There is no rascality,
no stupidity, no carelessness proof
against publicity. It is all vcrv we'd to
convict and punish dor diet officials, l?ul r
to prevent their crimes or errors is far (f
