tyThc f?mily of Capt. Doutelle will

The Capt. met with quite a loss last week
in the destrustion by fire of his large tent
where he u at present located near

the creditors and business will be contiu i

brandishing u huge cheese knife, chasing
a boy through the streets with tlir.eats of

fWThe train on the S. & C. It. R. on
Sunday last was delayed six hours by
the breaking of an axle of the engine.
When the train arrived at Yeinassee it
-was dark, the depot locked up and no
body to be seen. A lady passeuger, a
stranger, bound for. Beaufort fearing to

spot was obliged to go on to Savannah,
and the conductor made her pay her fare.

Ricker igniting, and for a minute it looked
as though there was going to be a
disastrous fire. Owing tp to the pre
caution of separating the gins from the
rest of the building only the cotton that
was being ginned was burned, so that the
loss was trifling. The Steam fire engine
was on hand in an incredib'y short time
and Union engine and the Hook and
Ladder promptly followed, but their services
were not needed. The boys however
were bound to have a squirt and

and for a while deluged the streets, to
the great joy of the small boys.

The town council having before it an
Ordinance providing for a salary for the
? Imendant, the question has beeu raised as
to the power of council to give him any
c >nip n>ation during his term of office.
If council cannot reduce the salaries of
employees during the time for which
they were elected it is probable that it
could not give a salary to thb Intendant
who was elected tc a non-salaried offic.
If this ia the caae council might pass an
Ordinance allowing the Intendant trial
justice's fees for his services as magis?
trate. This could not be objee' ed to by
any reasonable man.
