This brought warden Glcavcs, the I

sdf and liis committee; the committee, lie \
claimed, could do their duty, ns they had
always done and tiiey asked no odds of
any one, and if the motion prevailed the j
i committee would not confer with the;
! committee on accounts. Another riffle m j
the proceedings was caused by tho stib-1
' ject of bonds being agitated. "Warden I
. Mayo stated that Mr. Gilbert's bond had
i been given to the Intcndant who ac-1
1 knowledge'! before witnesses that the

; bonil was in Iiis possession and that when
the committee appointed to settle with
j Sir. GiMxTt called for the bond lie (the
] Intendmc) replied that he did not know
where it was. The Intendant denied
that he had ever had the bond in ques- '
tion in his possession, that it was not his
place to have the custody of bonds unices
placed in his hands by council.
Warden Gleavcs thought the blame
lay with-council who had neglected to
take proper precautions, and that it was
a very unwise proceeding to require
bonds of n public otiiccr and to let said
officer be the keeper of the bonds.
Six weeks without ruin has uttci'ly '
destroyed the corn crop in a great por <
lion of this county, and cotton will yield I
but little. Along the Port Royal Rail- 1
road and on the islands the drouth seem* 1
to have been the most disastrous and '
