JSP'Shi'ldon township has assessed a
tax of three mills for school purposes.
Yciliusec has assessed a tax of two mills
and Robert township a tax of two mills
for the same purpose.
pyNow is the time to make your returns.
The Auditor can be found at his

. J^-The True South of Branson is as
spicy as usual. It informs its renders
that "Sister Fuller is better," which is
good aews, and that the editor feels
poorly as their market only supplies bacon
and hominy, which is bad news.
+' -
tg?~Last Saturday evening our thrifty
burglars crossed Ih'c ferry and paid a
visit to the store of Mr. W. G. Rcbinson
011 the Fuller place. But little booty
was secured, probably enough to last until
next Saturday, when some other victim
will be selected by these light fingered
gentry.
C5F"Thc British ship Eumanidcs,
Capt Beard arrived at our wharf last
Saturday, ar.d is discharging ballast in
Mr Harrisons wharf. The Eumanidcs
is a full rigged ship of 1105' tons, is l'rotn
Greenock Scotland, and js owned, and
will be load Mil l?y, Messrs Robbins Budding
ton nud C*o. with timber for some
European market. She will carry about
one million feet.
1307 Governor Chamberlain has
appointed N. B. Myers Treasurer of
Beaufort county, vice George Holmes
removed for cause, and John Roberts
trial justice at Bruuson vice II. R.
Pinckney. We are informed that Mr.
? Pinckney expects to enter "Yale College.
5sr Smuggling is said to flourish in
our -icinUy to a considerable extent.
Rumor gives this branch of industry as
being ot no small proportions, and a case
was recently tried before one of our trial
justices resulting from a disagreement
between alleged operators in this service.
'"Croo'tcd whiskey" is active but no one
Bccms inclined to interest themselves in
putting a stop to its shipment, and consumption.
--^"Tony Capers a son of Si ih Capers,
living on Fripp p ?int died very
B'.iddorly hist Thursday bvcnmg and his
friends decided that death was caused
by eating poisoned terrapin soup A little
girl who ate a small quantity of the
soup was taken sick but recovered. It
is alleged that threats had been made
against the deceased, which confirmed
the suspicious of foul play. Dr Johnson
was notified and held an inquest.
Quite an interesting meeting of the voters
of Beaufort township was held al
the council chamber last Saturday, foi
the purpose of assessi ng a tax for school
purposes for the coming year. Exceptions
were taken to the report of the trustees
as not being full enough, and the meeting
appointed a committee to audit the
accounts and rcoort at an adjourned meetto
be held on Saturday July 10th.
Much interest was manifested in tlu
school end a lively debate of nn hour and
n half showed that this important tea tun
will hereafter receive attention from
some others than politicans.

Thursday even
ing la*t ylr. John P. Boyce and Miss Ilel
cn 31. Clancy were married in the Cuth
(lie church by FatVurFo'.chi.
The church we venture to say, never was
quite so full before and although the ail
wns very oppressive the audience was so
good natured and chatty n9 twice to
require the Priest to conic out and call
them to order.
After the ceremony the-happy couph
received their friends at the Sea Islanc
Hotel where dancing was indulged in till
twelve o'clock when the guests sat dowr
to an elegant supper such as Mrs. Old
knows how to provide. After doing
, justice to the supper dancing wa:
resumed and kept up till a late hour.
The town couucil met last Wednesday
evening. The case of Hetty Chisolm foi
keeping a disorderly house was called
but as she failed to appear the Marsha
was ordered to compel her to attend tin
upxt meeting. An application was re
ccived from J. E. Boyco for a renewal o
his liquor licence with F. W. Bchcpei
and John Franz ns securities.

The fact that we live at, a distance 1 1
t from a "Pott of Entry," does not 1
i necessarily entail upon us that terrible i
| ennui which results from monotony. Wet
j are rot sufficiently isolated to feel no in- j
; terest in events which transpire lieyond (
i the limits of our Corporation. We are a ! j
live people; have our exits and cutrcn-j
i ces in the Drama, and while, with I
pardonable egotism wo look mainly to !
our own interests, our eyes are bv no j
means entirely closed to what operates >
J around us. The Hail Road track passes
directly through the centre of our little
| town. This alone is sufficient to exact 1
a feeling of interest for the Port Royal j
Rail Road. We desire to witness a steady '
increase in the freight and passenger list,
and a feeling closely allied to enthusiasm !
, is experienced when an extra train rolls
up to the depot. Rut, there has existed j
tor some time a tcciing witli reference to J
this Road which does not depend for its i
origin altogether upon this commendable
and disinterested desire for its prosperity.
The able and efficient management
| of the late President T. P. Branch.1
(whose administrative ability failed to i
, impress its:) has cooled our ardour con-,
side!ably, and though the arrival and j
departure of the train is frequently the!
j signal which sends us scudding-about like
' some dement cdJin dividial's, our counter.ir1
ccs exhibit no anxiety which woublrircly I
i be mistaken for that excitement which j
i boys discover when pleasure or mischief
j is anticipated. Our possessions are so j
j small that we cannot look with in di (Terence
upon the sacrifice of anv thing which ;
we dignify by the name property. We
are simple enough to consider that we
have some interest in a cow which we
have purchased and whether poor or
not we still regard it a cow and hold
; the conviction with all deference to tlv*
>I opinions entertained by Mr. Branch that
1! we arc entitled to compensation for its |
| loss when killed by anengine. The course |
i pursued by Mr Branch in this respect en-1
I courages the inference that Bail Road 1
officers regard our right to property de-!
i'pendent entirely upon such conditions!
and restrictions as their policy shall
I direct, them to impose. One ot these j
conditions it appears is that the cattle '
i must keep clear of the track. Othci wise i
the engineer who jerks open the throttle1

! courts for redrcs=. Judgement was obtain1
j cd, but of what avail? Mr. Hranch direct'
ted that appeals should be taken and the '
I matter ended because parties were unable
j to incur further expense. Another cause j
. j of complaint is the unnecessary delay of!
I ' tmights shipped fiom points beyond the |
. j Road. We seldom send for supplies un- :
less we need them and our disappoint '
| ment can be imagined when they fail to I
, arrive. Picture to yourself a fellow hur- !

, | Pater Familias returns empty handed
. with compressed lips. and the fright-;
11 ened juveniles stand'around live'v and (

These things Mr. K'Htor in connection I

! to the extent. that wagon** loaded with \
I jcotton have been known, to cross the

{explanation. that the road is do-1
I j fieient in cross ti"s, and the track badly
1 | kept 11 j>? How could repairs progress, I
I i when certain sections could master frc;
qneritlv only two hands? We are not
i stock holders in this road but we arc;
" i inter* sted in its success, passim' through i
I a country to which the whistle of an
engine should have been a godsend. I
r Under efficient management the road i
. ' could not I ail to enhance the value of;
I our property, hence we deplore anything
' | which reflects discredit, upon that which
' | should be pointed to with pride. The
- nppointmeut of Mr Wilson we consider 1
.! a move in the right direction and cor- j
| ! diallv congratulate the Company oi: the '
J exchange effected.
r | Our acquaintance with Mr. Wilson
I though slight is sufiicent to warrant the
t! assertion, that he will apply the energy
t he evidently possesses for the removal of
those abuses which have given the Road
& bad odor in the nostrils of honest men,
in which effort we wish him a hearty God
5 speed and ultimate success. Already!
1 an improvement is apparent, but lie will {
I find it an "uphill" business. Time is ncc
