The Erenivg Telegraph of Charleston
will hereafter appear aa au eight page
moring paper ou Sundays.
Died?In Beaufort on Sunday June Gth
James Y.Sams age30 years.
?On Monday Juno 7th ut his residence
near Port Royal James A. McCrea
Beaufort was enlivened last week by two
excursions on the steamer Reliance from j
Savannah. The excursionists seemed to
have a good time dancing and playing
ball.
If you intend advertising dont patron-,
ize papers that arc not rend. The Tittbcne
is the only paper in Beaufort
county that is read by the intelligent
classes who arc the ones advertisers
desire to reach*
The time for making the tax returns
commences on the 1st of June, and will
continue until the 20th of July next.
R. .T. Martin the newly elected county
commissioner was sworn in and tool, his
seat vestci day.
Under a decree of ti e Supreme Court
the Savannah nnd CI arletton Railroad |
has parsed into the hands of the State,
Col. Low. will probably be put in charge
of the road by the Comptroller General.
We were visited Monday by another
excursion from Suvannah. The crowd
broke down Mr. Pollitzer's wharf and
one man went under but was fished out
safely. The colored base ball club of our
town played a part of a game with a
club that came on the excursion. Our
boys got a head and walked off the tiohl
with their noses in the air b caus- their
gtn-st end'-av red to rep'uee a p >or p;uy< i
with a good one.
The citizens of Columbia are ex -it d
ov?u the mom tar\ affairs of their city
and at a mass me ting h id .Monday
passed r? solutions requc-sling the major
and hoard of alderman to resign. It is
a little strange that the good people c f
that city expect honest government s >
long as the Legislature meets there to
exert its pernicious influence iu ilicir
rulers.
"When Sheriff Wilson went to Ilnrdccvillc
last week to make an arrest lie interrupted
a very interesting duel that
was about to take place on our aide of
the river, when his presence became
known the belligerents hastily left for
G corgia.
One more of the standard bearers has
come to grief. C. P. Leslie late Jand commissioner,
and at present representative
from Barnwell county has lct^tllc state
suddenly, and it is surmised*he fcaied
Ixing oblige to get four hundred thousand
dollars bail or go to jail. The mills
of the Gods seem to be grinding at but .
The Union-Herald "Would like to have
it decided by tlio Attorney General
whether county treasurers are legally entitled
to commissions for the collection
and disbursement of local school taxes,
in addition to the $2,500 allowed by law
as the maximum commissions. We do not
believe they have any right to receive
this extra compensation. In some coun
ties it has been retained out of the school
funds. Let us have a decision."
Last week Major. A. It. Waller living
on the Clioves plantation in Yemassee
township, committed succidc by shooting
himself with a pistol P. P. M. D. was
promptly on hand to ascertain the cause
of death on 1 put the county to the ex
pensc of $20. foj a post morten. This is
the first body Paul. P. has fingered since j
be laid his ear upon the vesta of the two j
executed murdcrors on the green some i
time ago, to ascertain ?\ hethcr the sheriff j
had done his work cffcctualy. The l)r
came near having another case when
. Creech shot IIays, but Hays stubbornly
refused to make a body of himself and
P. P. is thus minus another fee. If the
Coroner and the Dr. dont move away we
are afraid that this is but the beginning
of inquests and port mortcuis in their
neighborhood.
The question has been raised in many
counties as to whether warrants for the
pay of school teachers nro required by a
recent law to be paid by county commissioners
clucks upon county treasurers.
The letter of the law seems to require
the county commissioners to act upon
payments of everv kind and <1<
made by treasurers, but the spirit and
intent of this law and all'previous legislation
is against such a requirement.
It will work hardship to our teachers
without protecting the school fund.
After getting three tiustcea to sign
their warrants, and then hunting up the
school commissioner and getting his signature,
they must now present it to the
county commissioners when in session
and get a check, if the law iR strictly

iu certificates issued by the county commissioners
ct their meeting in April.
The huv requires them to reserve the
money received from licences to pay the
expenses of taking care of the poor, and
in ntter violnti >n of thi.. law they issued
the above certificates recclmblr fc r licences,
and at the same time issued checks pay- v?
able out of the three mills tax to pay p<
for feeding the poor. It is also an inter- L
esting fact that the issue of said checks
does not appear on the minutes. They
might also inquire who has the contract
for feeding the poor at piesent. We are
informed that the county treasurer is the
lucky man.

' It has been represented to me that
sonic of the trial justices in your city do
not turn over to the county all the fines,

ought to interfere iu New Uanip- (
shire. The Democrats are getting control
of the State, there is a dispute in the
Legislature, and lie should send tro?ps
1 there as he did to Louisiana. The cases
are perfectly parallel, except that he had
a brother-in-law in New Orleans and has &
none in Concord. But that is only a v
mutter of family interest. In point of
1 principle the cases are the same, and if t
I necessary he might send a brother-in-law
there fur 11 while and then order on the 1
