I UKAUTOIIT. S. C. JINK 8 1875.
V . Last Saturday was observed as Memorial
day by a few of our citizens. About
ouT Uua'lrel persons visited the
cemetery with their floral offerings, and
decorated the graves as far as their contributions
would go, but among 10.000
^ grave* the decoration could not be very
general. The only services on the occasion
was a prayer by Rev. Mr. Middletou.
Wo were glad to observe the absence of
the fife and drum and political harangues
that have trequ ently intruded upon these
occasions, solely for political effect, and
' trust that hereafter memorial day may
( be Jobservod as] quietly and decently as
I was last Saturduy.
IBoholart.-A bold thief paid a visit to
the fctore of John P. Bovce last Sundav
flight. He first broke a large padlock on
the back door, then pried open the door,
' breaking the lock and then had an open
passage to the premises. He then broke
the alarm drawer in the bar in which
was about fire dollars, and then wrenched
the drawer in the store from its fastenI
iugs and carried away. He also opened
the desk in which is kept the money
and secured about fifteen dollars more,
'1 refusing to touch some valuable jewelry
<, that was in the desk. The thief was no
doubt well acquainted with premises and
knew beforehand where to look for money,
as it seems that money was the only
thing he was after except a drink of the
best whiskey. He also carried off a school
check for forty dollars. Mr. Boyce was
' asleep over the store but the thief was
,, careful not to awake him.
L-> An unsuccessful attempt was also made
to enter the store of John Franz e |

merchant of Alle;,ic[ale, wa8 riding along
the road n?^r yjat town; an approaching
storm induced him to take op behind
liiro. on hj8 horse a little boy he knew,
tfi*.o was plodding afoot in the same
direction. As the shower came on, Mr.
JLCFitts drew rein under a large oak that
overshadowed the highway, and while
pausing a moment for better protection
from the suddenly descending rain a.
flash of lightning, attracted perhaps Ig
' the steel ribs and steal handle ot the un&r
brellathe young man held, struck Mr.
Fittl, tbo little boy and the horse, killing
the three instantly. The terrible
catastrophe was witnessed by a negro
Jl standing in a field not far off. The tree
y'was not touched.
tl The funoral of Mr. Fitts, who was law
student under Joseph Irwin*,
was preached isx Allendale by Be v. Mh

' rate the woes of the faithful road
I overseers, the sun blazed forth with all its
I power, as the pilgrims to the Mecca of
'r nil their earthly nopes, labored with 11 n<
gering steps apd slow up the stairs to
the offiec of the commissioners, who, as
usual were in their places ready to serve
the just and unjust. The chairman wore
I that serene and happy smile that so well
becomes the aspirant for political honors,
/ and welcomed all with the bland manner
' that is so well known in the sage of Oaki
land. After their toilsome ascent the
* many roadorerseexs and constables dropi
ped exhausted on the bench reserved for
| their especial use and as they gazed npon
I the countenance of P. P. their vi.-fons,
greenbacks and county chqpks drove
from their memory all remembrance of
tthe sweat and toil they had endured on
the publie highways. The board was
engaged during the forenoon in issuing
checks for school teachers, as the law
now requires all claims paid out by the
treasurer to be audited by the commissioners.
As we entered we were surprised
at the startling amy of intelligence
that greeted our eyes. We noticed in the
audience one Lieutenant Governor, one
Member of Congress, one County Auditor
_one County Treasurer one School ComMfei&aioner
two Members of the LegisU Wure,
three School trustees seven teachers,
eleven roadoverseers, three constabh*
three Merchants, one editor and oie
gentleman.
As the hoar of 12.m. approached mysterious
envelopes were slyly handed to
the clerk and as quietly slipped into a
idrawer by P. P. M. D. which proved to
be bids for past indebtedness Several of
our townsman who were well known to
T>o interested in the fond, sauntered into
She room and tried to look unconcerned
Is though the myrterious envelopes were
not their own labored productions. Their
looks, as the bids wero opened, was a
, #tudy, and |many visions of greenbacks
were suddenly dtspilled as some cruel
bidder, hard up for cash, went a quarter
of a cent lower, l'he bids aggregated
$ 3678. at a discount ot about 29. cents
on the dollar. The awards were as follows.
