t? vrral days past it has lieen known that,1
a movement was on foot looking t? a I
-change in the management of the Port j
Royal Railroad, in ord?f to meet the '
wishes of the bondholders. Mr W. E. !
Cilliooley, of the legal firm of Peckham,'
Fuller & Co., of New York City, has been '
in Augusta for several days, as reprvsenntative
of the bondholders. Three or
four meetings of the directors were hcldt
with ft view to ascertaining the wishes of
the bondholders. The last took place
Tuesday evening at *7 o'clock. Col. T. P. ,
Branch, president, resigned his position.
The iesignation was secepted. and Mr.
D. C. Wilson of Rcaufort, a member of
the directory and agent of thebondhold?r?,
wan elected to fill the vacancy. Col.
Branch was then elected to the vacant
position on the lward. It la rumored
that this action is but the preface to placing
the road in the bauds of Mr. Wilaon
as rrc? Ir?T, at tjie instance of the bondhold*
rs. There are two millions and a i
half of lmnds in the liands of the latter.
The Republican Convention.
The Convention was called to order at
2. o'clock F riday April 30th. by Roln-rt
Smalls County Chairman, who in a few
prefatory remarks stated the object of
the call and said aniorg other things that
the reason a vacancy had occurred in the
Board of County Commissioners was that
Mr. WaterhooiM. could not stand the pres
?urr orougnt to tn?r by pi uplc to whom I
T,\r County owed mot ey and wltn won-1

Resolutions were then introduced by

of former administrations.
I homas Hamilton m d Geo. A. Reed T:

the latter offering a suh-titutc which r

With rcgnrd to the charges made, he
had with him the figures which would |
confirm thcwi. While the Treasurer has
ever bet n allowed by law a compensation
tor his services not to exceed twenty five
hunt I r d dollars per annum it could be'
proved that Mr. Holmes had received two
thousand dollars Iroui the State, twelve
hundred and fifty dollars trom the County
and between six and seven hundred
dollars drawn ifom the school funds of
the different school districts as commissions.
His listeners from those school
districts might now Icaru why their
schools were closed from the lack of
funds. These uud other statements weie
listened to by an utfeutive audience. Tlu
time had passed said Mr. Myers, when the
fiat of a Senator decided who should be
a County Treasurer or Auditor, for we
now liad a Governor who did not leave A
the appointment to the caprice of one man.
The President of the Convention Hobert
Small* then offered some remarks in ^
vindication of the Treaaurtr, and Lieut, j ^
Governor-Oleave* being present wan invi- j ^
ted to nddhrss the Convention and took
occasion to give substantial reasons for
granting a respite to the men in Charles
